If you could choose any super power what would it be?
For me: the ability to control time. Specifically to slow it down and maybe even stop it.
I have wanted this power all my life.

Amazingly, to some small degree I have learned how to do this, in a very limited capacity (and only by my perception of course). However, the older I get the more control I seem to have over it...

Those who know me, know I have some sleeping disorders. If I don't get enough sleep I have severe sleep paralysis. I have over the last few years learned to control it to a degree. I can choose when to fall asleep (when tired enough), and can sleep with my eyes partially open. I can even decide not to have a dream in this state, or I can design a dream to my liking. Dreams in this state are the most vivid and realistic one can have, so this can be fun, or it can be amazingly terrifying (thus, learning to control it has helped me sleep better).

I skip the normal stages of sleep, and go into a sort of trance where I am half asleep (deep rem) and half awake (able to have normal conscious thoughts, and am aware of the world around me). In this state I cannot move, at all, it is every bit as powerful as full body paralysis.

I used to wonder why I could have seemingly an hour-long vivid dream in the span of 30 seconds when I fell into this state in high school, now I know why. When I go into that state, my perception of time is altered.

I know this now, because lately when I entered the trance (for lack of a better word) I was in a public place (taking a nap while parked next to a busy street). I could hear and see cars and people around me (although vision is not very good when in this state, as the visual part of my brain turns to a dream-centric state, and can be blurry or distorted).

As I allowed myself to gradually drift deeper into the trance (trying very hard not to fight it), sounds started slowing down, the cars gradually decreased in speed, my entire body tingles, like the feeling you get after you sleep on your arm. My heart feels like it slows down. It is a very strange feeling, but not all-together unpleasant.

As I drift deeper, the cars around me begin to sound like an mp3, where the compression gets higher and higher as it plays... Like the Doppler effect, but more severe. Sounds get almost choppy as they get lower and lower sounding...

Obviously I'm not actually affecting time around me, but just my own perception. I still think it is quite amazing that it is possible without drugs. The only thing I had eaten/drank the last time I did this was a pop-tart and a Monster (although the caffeine and ginseng seems to help somehow, it is not necessary).

Now, to stop the nay-sayers. No, this is not a dream, I'm describing. This has happened on numerous occasions, and it wasn't till today that I finally decided it is a real phenomenon and not just my imagination.

The question I'm wondering, is how? How does this work? In the process of skipping sleeping stages some areas of one's brain temporarily shut down (or at least reduce in usage as they rest). Instead of taking in all our usual external stimuli our minds turn inward. Perhaps that smaller loop (without the need for bodily control), at least in my case allows my brain in it's limited capacity to speed up in it's other functions... Causing time to appear to slow down on my external stimuli? Keep in mind I am still able to think to some conscious degree in this state. I'm sure this happens to many people when they sleep and are sleep deprived, but usually external stimuli are cut off to a degree that they are not aware that it is happening.

Another possibility, is that I have stumbled on some odd kind of personal hypnosis. Contrary to popular believe, hypnosis doesn't put you to sleep, but makes you hyper-aware.

Or perhaps it's a combination of the two.

Now, if I can only find a way to do this without the paralysis, then I would truly be onto something...

Slash

Power to grant myself every wish, duh.

but aside from jokes like that I would go for complete time control too.

CaramelAppleClock

Holy shit we have a chronokinetic in the clock crew!
And yes, form all forms of telekinesis I would probably choose to manipulate time too.

Blue, that is incredibly cool.

I've actually done research into a similar topic, myself.
Have you ever heard of something called "Lentation" before?

It's a process by which you slow down your perception of time, through the very opposite of what you do.  You induce adrenaline flow through your body, which slows down your perception of things, as you become hyper aware.  By training yourself to basically incite an adrenaline rush at will, you would be able to do just what you were descibing, slow down perception of time.

It's a very interesting concept.  Makes you consider the endless potential of the human mind.  Not all good drugs come from outside your body ;)

Haven't heard that term before... But I've tried that before. But no matter how time appears to fly or slow down I've never been able to see and hear a difference, until now. It's just like in the movies... like bullet time... except I can't fucking move. And I highly doubt I could get it to slow down enough to see a bullet, but I could probably hear supercomressed audio as if it were playing in real time... hmmm... I feel an experiment coming on.

it's a long process, and it's supposedly very difficult.  I'll have to do more research on it.

A lot of the reprogramming of your brain deals with things that require very quick reactions.  Such as when a cup falls from a counter and you catch it before it hits the ground.

I've induced the affect playing DDR once or twice, on some of the very difficult songs.  I focused purely on the arrows and for a second or two things slowed down a LOT.
Haven't played DDR for a while though :/

Seems like a waste using such powerful mind concepts on DDR.

Actually, seems like a waste using any time at all on DDR... But that's just me.

*chuckles*

I never focused on trying to make it happen, I was just giving an example of a time that I'd experienced it spontaneously.

The reason I didn't do much is because it was mostly only practical in combat situations, where your reflexes are all you have.  Though adrenaline puts a huge strain on your body (iirc), and I really had no reason to.

peyoteclock

so now falling half asleep is a super power.

wow, if that's true during high school i was fucking superman

That sounds exactly like the state of mind people enter when they are fighting something.

I would like to have the power to control the world with my mind. For instance, I'm walking along, and I see this beautiful girl, and I think I'd like to see her naked, and so all her clothes fall off. And she's scrabbling around to get them back on again, but even before she can get her knickers on, I've seen everything. Yeah. I've seen it all.

lucid dreaming

or

astral projection.

you should look into those 2 things. I think you will be surprised with the things you will read and the things you have done yourself. also read about how to induce these things.
