I used to have a regular customer, an old lady, who'd hang around a little too long during the transaction because old people get lonely, and she'd always talk about her childhood in boston back in the 40's
she super loved boston and always said that she hadn't been there since she was a little girl and she just wants to go back and see it one more time before she dies
she was so wistful I honestly would have bought her a plane ticket if I could, but maybe that was her plan

one time the next customer in line waited until she was was out of earshot and he went "boston sucks" and gave me a look like yikes 😬
he said "I have to go there for work and I never would if I didn't have to, it's my least favorite place in the world"

I pictured the old lady going to boston and finding out that it actually sucks, and it made me so sad. going back to boston seemed like the only thing she cared about
I think about this often

starting from the assumption that boston sucks, what would be the best outcome? for her to go back to boston and find it's no longer what it is in her head (if it ever was) seems heart-rending.
but would it be better if she died still dreaming about it? going into the great beyond never getting to fulfill her one wish?
