the person on the phone said "'B' as in 'boy'?" and for a moment I thought she said "'D' as in 'doy'?" and my brain immediately started trying to optimize this problem in the wrong direction
ie not "how do I reinvent the nato alphabet from first principles" but "what phonetic alphabet would be the least helpful and create the most confusion?"

letters that sound similar when you say them out loud: B P C T D E (weak matches: Z V G)
so if you said "e as in eel" it could sound like teal, deal, eel, zeal, peel, veal
or like bog pog dog cog but that doesn't really work because the kind of colloquial ones people default to are "b as in boy, d as in dog" so even though they rhyme and have aurally similar initial plosive sounds, most people wouldn't hear them and actually think "doy and bog" because bogs aren't that important, so it wouldn't be enough to have similar auditory phonetics, it's like a tongue twister, there's a bit more to it

and that's about as far as I got before I went "wait what the fuck am I doing"

I am undefeated in the kumite with an astonish 0-0-0 record

I just feel like, if it's literally your job, it shouldn't be that hard to make your multiple choice tests so that
1) the correct answer is actually in there, instead of a wrong answer that's maybe kind of less wrong than the others

and
2) when people select the correct answer, it's marked as correct, instead of incorrect

I have a print of 'B' framed in my main hallway and my favourite thing in the world is when a new person comes into my house and asks "what's with the 'B'?"

PhantomCatClock

I've had actual certificate trainings that counted towards renewing 300-1000 dollar certs have questions like "what's 16 in hexadecimal?" and it wants you to select 0xFF

well guys, i did it

i bought a single entry to the powerball

not sure what i'm gonna do with the money but i'm probably gonna let it change me, yeah

VCRClock

why play powerball when you can just buy every combination of numbers in a state lotto and win every time?

if you don't have the cash upfront try asking your bank for a loan. you'll be good for the money once you win

yeah you're right that does look like it would hurt, unless the middle head is actually emerging from another dragon, obscured by clouds top right, that just had to get his 2¢ in between the other guys

or, it's one of those dragons where the neck connects to the center of the back like a submarine

do you guys like corny midi music? I feel like in a lot of electronic music, including my own when I make work, people really try to avoid that "preset" sound, like clean midi pianos and stuff. I've really come around to music that so boldly uses stock midi sounds though!

For a long time I thought the most potent example of this was James Ferraro's Far Side Virtual, which is a super sick record but while I wouldn't say it was being done ironically or disingenuously, it was definitely part of that like 2010-2013 tumblr era 90s nostalgia (stuff like arcane kids bubsy 3d parody comes to mind).

dumpster Clock introduced me to a record called Demons Dance Alone by the Residents and it's really cool! It came out in 2002 so I don't think the production techniques it uses were old or dated enough to be in vogue. I really wonder what the intent was! I really love this record I am gonna link a good song from it and you guys can tell me what you think

Also here's some of that james ferraro record i mentioned

what do u guys think!

PhantomCatClock

fighting tooth and nail to find the right voice packs for each midi only to have it called preset not even twenty years lat—

..wait

not even thirty years later

not what you were talking about but I do occasionally listen to midi files i've saved, lamenting that i have no idea what i used to make them sound the way they did. the closest I can find for this one is someone actually running it in the program it was made in

which would be cool except that isn't how i listened to it. The slur (music term) sounded so much better, which at this point is likely just me remembering wrong

going deeper into this same tangent, there used to be a zip floating around of just about every midi file that people had on their homepages / whatever on the whole internet and it isn't even that large because .mid

maybe not the ideal way to browse them but https://www.windows93.net/ has that folder with a baked in synth labeled as "MIDI Jukebox" on the desktop. I can't point at any single instrument as being bad but I also can't find a single one of these I remembered that sounds good on it :shrug emoji:

i forgot where I was going with this
