I read The Doors of Perception and Heaven and Hell, which ties in perfectly to the point I was making earlier about reading philosophy. It was a long time ago, but I think that he first made the argument that monks only experienced visions because of certain spores or molds or whatever in the ropes they used to whip themselves with? Like, their visions were nothing more than a chemical reaction. (I got no qualms with that part.*) However he then went on detailing his own experiences with mescaline and somehow qualified those as true spiritual experiences? I might be oversimplifying a great deal or misremembering, but I was like "Yeah, whatever pal."

Doors of Perception does read like a "woooah man i'm sooo high lmao" text, but it's interesting in the sense that you can tell that it ties into his other philosophical beliefs. You can tell Huxley was a lot into Asian/Eastern philosophy, and what he says about the experience of taking drugs is kinda reflexive of that. In that sense, The Island is quite illustrative of that. It's a description of a utopical societal model with a plot - kinda like Thomas More's Utopia - that pretty much illustrates his beliefs.

Was I near the mark with the above? If so, do you remember his justification for it?


Emil Cioran has some interesting things to say about utopia in History and Utopia.

being a semi-frozen drink, slurpees do not vibe a lot. it is subtle; nuanced. i am not surprised you never detected the radiation.

i've been an ICEE guy my whole life because that's all there was. I accepted that these drinks are never as nice as how I remembered them as a kid. like, i must've drank them faster or something, because icees always melt before i'm done, and they always get those.. pockets? where you slurp up a little cave and the straw has nothing else to suck up despite being submerged, until you stab it again

in texas, i was next to two 7/11s (that were across the street from each other. This is not an exaggeration. the difference was what brand of gas you wanted) and had a SLURPEE brand slurpee for the first time in my adult life. holy fuck, what a genuinely better product. like, ignoring taste (which was better, and they came in a million flavors including coconut, fuck yeah) it didn't do any of the shit i mentioned before. it was just the perfect slurpee experience until the final drop.

assuming a machine in good working condition, i think getting to the point where the drink must be agitated in order to be slurped mostly has to do with factors such as volume of slurpee purchased and the rate at which it is consumed

consider that at t=0, a slurpee is solids suspended in liquid. the solids are conducted up the straw by the liquid

a 40 oz cup probably does offer a greater amount of initial smooth sailing than the next size down; however, the larger circumference of the cup and greater time required for consumption allows more of the solids to "dry out" as the liquid is siphoned from the bottom, leaving a sizable "brick" once the liquid has been exhausted

this suggests that the issue may be mitigated some by positioning the straw intake at the top of the drink, rather than the bottom as in the usual procedure. however, if a slurpee is more solid than liquid, the gradual flow of the liquid downward through the solids might produce a somewhat "brickier" drinking experience should the drink be consumed in this manner

From what I recall - it's been a few years - yeah, kinda. I don't think he outright states that it's the only legit spiritual experience, but he does place it on a pedestal. He makes the point that he's now enlightened by the whole thing, which is kinda interesting in its assumptions. I guess he draws the gist of this thoughts from there

That's a fair criticism, but utopias are more of a thought experiment than anything, they're a way to make a broader point without actually being a primer for the ideal society or whatever. Although I suppose that that criticism implicitly negates that utility. Even then, I think that like most philosophy, their value comes from that broader point rather than from the details, I suppose
