they've promised me for years we would have animated PNGs and I never see any. I saw one example nearly a decade ago and that was it. where are my jetpacks and animated PNGs? I thought this was the future.

it reminds me of a puzzle book I had when I was a kid
mad libs briefly had a spin-off where every page was a fun little puzzle in a larger mystery story, a bit like professor layton except the puzzles actually made sense in context
in one of them there's a big machine with a bunch of switches and knobs and meters and stuff, and a list of instructions like "if the electrometizer is below 10, the waveulator must be set to an even number, if the particalmostat is off, the waveulator must be set to a number divisible by 3, unless the razmotron is set to pulse"

and you were supposed to figure out why the machine wasn't working
and the solution was it isn't plugged in, wakka wakka!
but as a kid I still loved just looking at all the little knobbies and troubleshooting this fictional machine, even though I saw the loose plug in like 3 seconds
I had loose plans to rip it off for a video game, but then somebody else already made Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes and Space Team

I got an email from the council that rejected my art grant proposal with a link to download my application for if i wanted to revise and resubmit for the next round of funding-- except the link was a dropbox containing all fifty applications. Of the fifty submitted, thirteen received funding and the thirteen in question all had a demarcation at the top of the applicant's minority status. One of which was literally a blank page, with buddy's name attached.

thinking about how mickey mouse falling into the public domain led to this thing of people doing things that probably would have been legally protected under fair use anyway
and trying to think of what you could do with mickey mouse besides parodying him, and kind of coming up blank because he's just not very interesting

I think the funniest thing would be for warner brothers specifically to release a looney tunes cartoon and have him just be standing there or something

it's way more interesting to me that felix the cat is in public domain, because felix was a bit more surreal and kind of embraced the cartoon reality instead of trying to do a cartoon version of, like, being in a barn or putting on a stage show or whatever. I could be wrong, I haven't really watched too many of the early cartoon shorts, but I associate felix with what I think of as the more quintessentially cartoony kind of cartoon where like... a character can climb inside of a toaster, and just enter a nonsensical reality where everything is based around the abstract concept of toasting things, and just have a little adventure there, and then it gets terrifying, and then he leaves

I feel like cuphead kind of sparked this appreciation for old rubber hose cartoons, but a very particular kind where you're doing a little bouncy dance and like flowers get angry faces and shoot seeds at you. and not so much the kind of crazy cartoon logic where like you can punch a guy so hard that he turns into 7 smaller versions of the same guy, and they'll like swarm around and grab your shadow and start choking you with it, so you slam 17 doors closed on them and go "phyew!" but then the little guys become become one guy again and he grabs the door off the wall and crumples it into a little ball and eats it so now there's just a blank wall there and you're trapped inside a room with no exit

also felix has a really iconic design and you see its like in places that aren't directly related to him, like batman returns and a bunch of simon stalenhag paintings, because really they're commenting on the proliferation of... well, mickey mouse. (I think probably... disney is a lot more litigious than whoever owned felix, so you could kinda go "look, it looks a lot more like felix than it does mickey, and felix came first. the felix guys aren't suing me, so there's no reason for disney to.") but even before that, there's such as for example the famous kit cat klock, where the cat's eyes move with its tail which is acting as a pendulum? that's not felix. not officially anyway. but the people who own the felix brand, like... didn't do a good job of protecting it lol
and a result of that is there's this vague impression of felix on the world, but it's not particularly associated with a company the way that disney properties are, or even the people that created him (which is good. definitely don't google the names of the creators of felix the cat and find out more about the main one). it's kind of like the Laughing Man logo from standalone complex where signifier is divorced from signified and thus doesn't really mean anything anymore but also kind of means everything

idk I just think an artist could do something cool with all that. if they wanted.

ever since felix went into public domain i've been using the dimensporter from the 1989* film to learn about alternate universes to try to trick you into thinking you're in one and one time i got a slurpee to believe it before remembering that wasn't in the simulation dimension so i came back and tried again (and you still didn't fall for it)
