street smart, but how will you compare to these kids who have only ever studied tests written by the one teacher

RobClock

Update: my instructor manually went in and graded that test which brought my score up from 43% to 91%

Seems like maybe it shouldn't get automatically graded at that rate but what do i know.

PhantomCatClock

the professor for my "topics in computer science" (great course title, very descriptive, thank you college) class likes us to document our process when doing assignments in a way that's replicable using screenshots and careful explanation of everything we do. I understand why and actually like this, it's more human. not just "here's the results" or even "here's what I did" but "here's what I was thinking and why I made these choices"

the last couple assignments I've taken to being somewhat cheeky, explaining the stupid errors I make along the way and the process of backing up and fixing my mistakes and trying again, because, I don't know if I've told you guys this before, I've got fucking gremlins, fellas. stupid tiny impossible mistakes that nobody else would make or notice manifest themselves around me and set every simple technological process on fucking fire. makes ever minor task way harder than it needs to be

in the past I'd clean up small errors without documenting them and even go through and delete mistaken commands from the list of commands I used, get nice clean screenshots that only show the right steps to take, even if it meant undoing something just so I could get a better screenshot of what it looks like to do it correctly the first time

but now I'm just like "and here's where I typed eudo cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.backup instead of sudo cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.backup even though you told us to use tab to autocomplete bash commands exactly because it helps us spot typos like this. I went to go back to fix it after it gave me an error but then for some reason virtualbox crashed. here's a screenshot of the crash report. I can't stop screaming. and here's what ubuntu looked like when I started it back up. it... seems fine? I'm just going to keep going with the assignment and assume that crash was crazy random happenstance that will never happen again. pray for me"
he gave me bonus points lol hoorayyy
the comment said something like "That was captivating. Glad you were able to make it out okay"

PhantomCatClock

If you mess up the fstab on my computer it would never work again. the joys of doing it yourself

PhantomCatClock

it occurs to me that the fstab can't be encrypted so i guess you could put my drive on another computer/load something else on this one and fix it that way, nevermind

Slurpee

I messed up the fstab and ubuntu booted into something called emergency mode which had just enough utility for me to mount the drive and run simple bash commands (and also nano (blessed)). but instead of using the backup I made I just fixed the typo and when I rebooted again it was working as intended

editing sudoers scared the shit out of me though lol. even with visudo verifying the syntax I was like "please god"

the syntax in the sudoers file is so goofy and nowhere you go will give any good examples for doing what we were tasked with, which was allowing only one specified user sudo access only for the mount and umount commands and only for a specified partition. also nobody will tell you upfront, hey, when you're specifying a command in the sudoers file, you have to use the absolute path to the command binary, so run whereis umount real quick sport

but now we're moving into bash scripting and any complaints I have about syntax pale in comparison to how goofy that shit is

in the real world, you will type a dozen incorrect commands into the terminal while trying to accomplish something, and then pcat will use the terminal after you and he'll use the up arrow to scroll through the history and read all of the hilarious typos and plaintext passwords you typed
