Sorry if i used the wrong word! I have super little experience with actual MIDI software and trackers and the like. I guess when I say preset I mean the preset sounds you'd have on a MIDI keyboard. But like the really shitty one my chapel had for hymns haha.

This is all cool stuff! the only like tracker/midi song i can really think of that I used to listen to alot is that piece of magicmix one that was in the install gentoo video. i used to be really into dorky linux memes when I was like 17 and i guess i still am haha

that song legit rules tho

did people actually listen to midis alot back in the day? i always assumed it was like more of a 50/50 creator listener engineering artists community rather than a substitute for what would one day be MP3

i came across this video today and it really captivated me. i knew there was definitely A famous ddr video of some dude just ruling hard at ddr and i suppose this is it haha. thats a rerecord of his famous routine from like 2005 (crazy how that video is gonna be 20 years old youtube in a couple months!)

i feel like when i see pro level ddr gameplay they just look like they're having a seizure with their feet and holding the bar, i like this vid because that guy is just a genuinely great dancer !

I think it's a format, like SWF, that happened to catch on in a low bandwidth world

my family's first computer that connected to the Internet had a 160 MB hard drive, and if you had to move more than 1.44 MB of data, that was going to take multiple diskettes. internet was 56 kb per second. MP3 compression didn't exist.

I think .mid, besides its basic functionality as an instruction set for digital instruments, became a quick reference format for music. midi playback was never really about sounding true to life (or even, really, synthesis/experimentation/pushing the limits of hardware like the Commodore demo scene), but merely audibly reproducing what X is supposed to sound like, in a format that doesn't take too long to download, so I don't have to call you and play you an instrument over the phone. all the while, compression of actual audio recordings was becoming more sophisticated, and transmission thereof somewhat more feasible (see: RealPlayer) so I imagine only a few people felt that making MIDI sound better was important

so this midi ecosystem exists, the hardware and software support exists to play it from your browser... that's where we get into people just downloading midis other people created and using them as unsolicited, autoplaying auditory decoration on their websites. we'd invent this all over again in the myspace era

actually listening to music? use your tape and CD collection, of course. heck, put the CD into your computer's read-only CD drive (sold separately) and it may be an Enhanced CD with bonus multimedia content from the artist!!

the ddr routine is impressive

general respect button press for people who *really* learn dance skills and employ them/teach them in social (not formal performance) settings

like you 100% didn't have to do that and I don't know if it really opens as many doors for you as we imagine, but it's cool that you put time into it and you look cool doing it

I was thinking about that the other day when my boss complained about a download site being slow. The page was white for a few seconds and then blinked, fully, into existence, then the download link did nothing for a little bit before starting a 10MB/s download

it's like

Yeah, if you wanted a 1MB file in the 90's, that's 10-30 minutes (it was at least stable at the speed thanks to phone lines if you had dial-up) but it cannot be overstated the compounding effects of everything being shittier, too. It wasn't one big wait when you wanted one big file. It was every image on every page loading three vertical rows of pixels at a time, waiting to download the 250kb Naked_Picture_of_Alexandra_Paul.bmp, then having to start completely over when someone picked up the phone because your OS is also from the 90's so your options are 'start over' and 'give up', and then the unfinished one didn't delete and you're out of room so you have to start over a THIRD time only to find out it's a drawing of inuyasha kissing simba

where was i going with this

my boss is only seven years younger than me but he only plays jrpgs and has only played jrpgs since he was a kid so i can blow his mind with the slightest sushi slice thin wafer of culture and it's been going to my head lately, sorry

PhantomCatClock

it took me a really long time to get over every browser deciding that (pure) autoplay needs to be blocked but i BEGRUDGINGLY CONCEDE that, with the benefit of hindsight, the internet is a much better place even if my blog can't have the sailor moon music box playing over it

thinking about my favorite naruto characters, random coughing guy, raido, and toofpick

k9

i actually just started reading naruto. it's not like high art or anything but it's a pretty fun read i'm trying to make reading more of a habit of mine :)

PhantomCatClock

I read the first like.. ten trade paperbacks of naruto IN A BOOKSTORE WITHOUT PAYING (i did buy coffee at least) and even back then there were like a billion books, i was only catching up

in like the tenth or eleventh one, a character says something along the lines of "Shut up, Naruto. You're not even the main character in your own manga," and I went... oh yeah, then stopped reading

PhantomCatClock

which I fully admit was not the proper response to that genuinely good joke, but I was also kind of looking for an our because I was definitely stealing entertainment from the knowledge store

FLOUNDERMAN_CLOCK

random coughing guy was robbed. he should have been a bigger character. SOURCE: I read the fucking entirety of naruto a couple weeks ago because I felt like it. I forgot the official release censors when shikamaru starts smoking, among other things. they're brain dead COWARDS like everyone in the anime/video game localization industry they should all be rounded up and buried alive.

FLOUNDERMAN_CLOCK

also just read hakaijuu after almost a decade of "I'll get to it" and it's nothing but wall to wall excellent monster designs murdering people and occasionally this crazed gym teacher shows up

I love this guy. people complain about this series getting too ridiculous in the second half but I really enjoyed it. it's like how gantz turned completely insane for the final third.
