Activision Threatens To "Stop Supporting" Sony Consoles

Bear in mind there's a degree of saber-rattling to this, but still; Activision boss Bobby Kotick has warned Sony that his company - the world's largest third-party publisher - may cease support for the PS3 and PSP.

Speaking with The Times, Kotick said "I'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform. It's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation"

 Subtle. But wait. It gets  subtler.

 "They have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates are likely to slow", he continues. "If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony...When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console - and the PSP [portable] too".

 In that absolute worst-case scenario, that would mean no Call of Duty for Sony consoles. No Guitar Hero for Sony consoles. No Tony Hawk, either. It probably won't ever come to that, of course, but Kotick's words are still worth noting. After all, when was the last time you ever saw a third-party publisher so openly threaten a major platform holder?

I'm no ps3 fan but that's kinda fucked up... coming out like that so hard. If it happened it could be a huge blow for Sony. Now, I don't know if Kotick tends to talk out of his ass like that all the time but every friend I have that owns a ps3 at least owns a call of duty or guitar hero game, they are some of the most popular games on every console. Are they really losing money making games for the ps3? Seems to me that Sony failed to cuddle with Kotick and he is super mad about it.

He does, I wouldn't mind if I exaggerated by saying Kotick is the worst thing ever happened to Activision. He is a money drilling mother fucker.
 
He first wiped out Brutal Legend because he thought it wouldn't milk money because it was a genuine game, and then regreted to do so by making a huge drama even if it was not in Activision's former hands on the beginnning and he is now pulling away some of the best fans on their COD and GH games which are Sony users just because they don't sell out like fucking WiiFit.
 
What I hate of this generation is that 3 Million copies is not enough milestone for taking as "success" anymore now that Nintendo managed to trick a bunch of idiots that were better just watching American Idol and Fox News. Now everyone wants that money bite becoming much harder to get good and original games to sell better than cheap generic pieces of shit. Ubisoft and Activision are great examples.
 
At least EA learned the hard way to publish games that seem to promise quality even if they won't sell as Halo or Call of Duty (see Mirror's Edge), and they still publish cheap-ass games that could give some bucks (see Littlest Pet Shop), but without discarding quality on the library. But Activision is trying to whore out attention on anything like a spoiled kid instead of actually trying to host games that aren't overpriced (as good Call of Duty is, they share the very same engine, and development isn't as expensive).
 
Bobby Kotick has done nothing but give a horrible image to the company now and I really hope he gets fired ASAP.
 
 
EDIT: On the other hand he got a right point that the Sony products are overpriced as hell too. I really wished they made a PS3 Slim so they could slash out $100 of the price at least and make it more accesible, but that said they do not have the right to whine about that because they already have the development kits paid.
 
EDIT2: In an additional reflection, I think Activision is being too much bark and no bite, they are so money-hungry right now that they wouldn't abandon Sony for shit.

While I was strongly hoping Sony would be the weakest link this generation, it is a bit surprising to see it actually happen. Sony issued a statement in response to Activision and basically said "We're doing great."

So either Sony is in complete denial, or Activision is fucking I'm a edgy teen.

No Fuck you and everyone who questions my post, I owned a playstation and I owned Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 and it was good.
But making the same game over and over with the goal being to at max live up to the old games hype is just pathetic and a doomed path regardless.

I'm not stupid I know those franchises are major sellingpoints for the playstation, but so is Wii's extremely non-hetrosexuall games (a.i. all of its games): Just because they are making alot of money does not mean I can't hate them for it and resent their blatant milking of the mainstream audience.
