I need to do a clean install of my computer no matter what, it's sluggish and ugh. I backed up everything, but I have no idea what I should install. XP Home, Vista Ultimate, or Win7? I was thinking I would maybe go to Vista so that incase Microsoft has that $50 upgrade to Win7 deal again, I could take advantage. Any suggestions?

(Also by free, I actually mean the DVD genuine, not torrented or stuff, my mom's friend bought it from a garage sale for one dollar, the thing wasn't even opened.)

Windows 7. It looks like developers will actually care about it.

Vista, with a free upgrade cupon if they are still offering it. Otherwise get* a copy of XP until 7 comes out

Whichever one you choose, make an image of the drive when it and everything you need have been installed. Then you will have a clean image the next time you need to clean house.

I have to agree with Corpsegrinder. It does have some extra features that aren't necessary but Vista is a pretty solid OS. I like it probably a bit more than XP, and the fact is that XP is out of date and will be phased out much sooner than Vista or Windows 7. From what I've read Windows 7 sounds promising, but I haven't used it so I can't comment.

I've used a handful of Vista OS's, and I'd say Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate are the ones worth looking into. If you're using it for gaming and flash and average home computer stuff, you really don't need ultimate, and home premium will work. Although, Ultimate is nice to have on a good computer.
