To be fair, the font they're using for Avatar is really awful.

I liked it, but my complaints are:

  • Not directly related to the movie but, why the fuck didn´t Ubisoft hire Michel Ancel (Rayman, Beyond Good & Evil, Peter Jackson's King Kong) for the official game they whored the license so much about? I mean, the deal of alternate worlds and the relation of nature and magic is something he works a lot with. I will forgive it if they wanted him to focus 100% on BG&E2, though.
After he clusterfucked the King Kong game, they weren't going to let him touch Avatar. I don't think Ancel's really into licensed properties.

Besides, the Avatar game was done by Ubisoft Montreal, the Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed guys. Ancel works for Ubisoft Montpellier, if I remember.

I'm fairly sure Dances With Wolves doesn't have exclusive dominion of "Military man switches sides" stories. :p

Im going to make a movie with a Comic sans MS title.

Every time I hear what Avatar compares to, it just gets funnier and funnier.

What a lot of people don't get is that almost all movies have a basic plotline that just gets copied over and over with different people in different places.

And with Avatar, this has suddenly become scandalous and worth ridiculing. Weird.

And all of the scene transitions are taken from power point.

Another thing is that studios WANT and almost demand that movies of a genre follow the same plot. They want to see their investment back so they don't like taking chances, using a plot that has worked 10000 times before is a safe bet.

Kind of like star wars episode III?

So I saw it in 3-D.

The story is forseeable in every turn, all the characters are cliché to the point of silly:
Angry military dude who wants to shoot first ask questions never,
Scientist with attitude who is also a hippie and nobody likes or wants to understand her because she is the polar opposite of the military guy
Bloated capitalist that only cares about profit... which is redundant since if future companies are half as homosexuall as todays companies they're spaceships would drive on eco-fuel and their weapons would shoot corn,
Angry indian male who is rival of main protaganoist
Angry indian girl who is obvious match for main protaganoist (also the promised wife of Angry indian male ofcourse.)

The wildlife is nice even if it's mostly earth species painted with florescent lights... apperently florescent lights + smurf + pocahontas = great movie concept.

BUT! It is still a enjoyable movie, I have tons more to comment but in the end I don't really mind all that much... a movie can't get more polished or better than this because that would stray of the mainstream audience.

So all in all, from a personal perspective, 7/10, from a film critiques perspective, 8.5-9.5/10.

TequilaClock

Quote from: RibsClock;1712746Also this movie is a lot more fun if you go with friends and make jokes about it the entire time IMO

I really wanted to say stuff like "Shiiiiit son, he got a better ride than you now! Guess he can score your girl now" in the Toruk scene. Sucks that my sisters took the movie too seriously.

SnakeClock

Much as I love this film, all this talk makes me hope they do a RiffTrax of it.

Here's something of possible interest. The Na'Vi were originally going to look like this:

QuoteIf you sync to your banshee and you’re syncing to a tree, why not sync into a person? I almost feel like you’ll have the most amazing orgasm, I guess. It was a very funny scene to shoot because there were so many technical things that sometimes you have to keep in mind that paying attention to all those might disrupt the fluidity of how a scene is supposed to take place.

They are basically raping trees and horses the entire movie.

I saw Avatar today and to be honest it was extremely average. The use of 3D was excellent and the best I've seen so far but the story, acting, special effects, design, music and everything else was just average. I wouldn't say I didn't enjoy it but I wouldn't bother watching it again.

I think most people know that. Every traditional story follows roughly the same structure but the structure is fairly vague - a hero leaves his comfortable life and enters a world (either physical or abstract) of excitement and danger. He is scared at first but then begins to like it, however then the threats become too great and he is tempted to run back home. Eventually some revelation inspires him to push through and find a way to solve the problem by combining the knowledge of the two worlds.

There is no story structure that says the hero has to be jaded by western civilisation and is taught to respect nature and the simple things in life, that is just James Cameron ripping off Pocahontas.

I thought John Smith was generally indifferent to the Powhatan way of life, and didn't quite integrate with them the same way.

Yeah I know there isn't but most movies do use a very simple formula, I'd look it up but I'm too lazy. The formula doesn't say what the hero has to be jaded by but it does say he has to be jaded by something.
