Quote from: RibsClock;1714412Not even. The alien queen was about the same size as the heavy lifting robot, which was smaller than the mecha gun robot from Avatar, which was smaller than the thanator, so the Thanator was much bigger.

(however as this things only attack, essentially, is biting, the alien queen could have killed it simply by letting it bite her and get its head dissolved by acid.)

Aaaaaaaaaaand that's my nerdiest post of the week!

I made this highly accurate size comparison. I guess you're right but the queen is taller though!

I wonder what would happen if they would connect their hair thingies together

Quote from: RibsClock;1714470Well I didn't look too close because I was too busy whispering jokes into my brother's ear, but I'm guessing they actually do have genitalia there (hence why they wear loin cloths in the first place instead of going naked) and that the neuro-connector braid thing is just for doing a vulcan mind-meld with six-legged horses.

Ok so then why did they have human genitalia? I think one of my major complaints is the complete lack of imagination as far as the aliens go. Obviously they wanted to make them easy to relate to so they couldn't have them look like Alien or anything but they could have gone a bit further than big blue indians. Why did all the alien animals have six legs but the navi were shaped just like humans? Come on designers, put a bit of effort in.

Didn't you fags read the article i posted (no you didn't)

I thought that was a drawing of them about to have sex.

Quote from: RibsClock;1714486Still beats star trek, where nose putty and hair define entire worlds.

Most expensive movie ever made VS virtually no budget. A fair comparison indeed.

Star Trek has its excuses though, what was Avatar's excuse? They should have spent some of that million billion dollar budget on some decent designers.

Quote from: RibsClock;1714501Well and also eleven other full-budget feature-length films. I know there might be an "excuse" for the shows, but for Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, Nemesis, and the recent "Star Trek" movie, each of which had special effects out the ass, what was their excuse?

Well to be honest I can't say I'm a big fan of their aliens either but it gets away with it because of the kind of stories they tell. Star Trek is set in the super super future and is about the universe being all civil and advanced and having diplomatic arguments and, for something like that, very humanoid aliens kind of works.

A story about very primitive aliens who have had pretty minimal human contact in which both the aliens' anatomy and culture is almost identical to ours is really pushing it. How much more exposure had the navi had to humans than the aliens in District 9? Because they were a hell of a lot more convincing.

Mostly though, Star Trek is an established brand so when I see their wrinkly forehead aliens I accept it. Avatar is something new and it's watched with fresh eyes and this kind of thing really stands out. I think Cameron was probably trying to be all classic sci-fi with his predictable plot and humanoid aliens and unobtanium but it just doesn't work without a substantial amount of originality to balance it out.

BunnyClock

Hmm yes, I agree. A T-Rex is about the same size as a thanator

wait no, the reason why he made them so super humanoid is because it needs to be easy to fall in love with them like jake sooly did

Yeah I got that but a good design team should be able to make that possible without just making them big blue humans. I just think it's a bit of a cop out.

I don't know much about the established canon of Star Trek, but I'm fairly sure at one point it states that all (or almost all) aliens in the Trek universe are evolved or mutated humans that left earth, but I could be wrong. Plus by the point those movies came out they had only had the established look of the series to work with.

oh wait, you guys DO know Cameron designed the aliens SPECIFICALLY so that people could see themselves having sex with it? He would design an alien then ask his friends if they'd fuck it, and if they said no he would go back and toy around with the design.

PirateClock

The reason aliens look humanoid is because it's easier to empathize and identify with them. Sure you could change the blue cat people to floating jellyfish the size of a aircraft carrier but i doubt many people will give a shit about them.

Mehhhhhhhh not for me. To be honest she seemed a bit awkward to me, I think it was down to her being so thin, specifically in the face. I can kind of see why some people might see the aliens as attractive, but I sure didn't.

Gracious! Never mind, then.

While I agree, a tyrannosaurus  Rex probably wouldn't survive a thanator attack I don't believe the thanator in it's right mind would attack a t-rex mainly due to it's size.
