And the drug cartells won, a sad day for humanity.

But it could actually work in the governments favour as it does on say Ibiza. Or it could go down the drain which is more likely in a country already plagued by corruption.

Platos Playground ?

Sinister Clock

It is the opposite of drug cartels winning you dick.

Fuck you propaganda, this is a great day for humanity.

The only reason they didn't do it before was because America putting pressure on them. I don't this think will do much to combat drug cartels, to do that you have to fully legalize drug possession and selling, then people would not need to buy their drugs from cartels.

Now dealing in ultimatums is a fools errand SinisterClock.
No country has succesfully adopted full drug legalization without it going overboard or in laymen terms; To shit. So do not draw that parallel.

Trying to say that this is like the German example of legalizing prostitution to protect woman is idiocy, you are talking about a country where corruption is beyond dangerous levels.
Germany is having a hard time controlling it's prostitution even though it is fully legalized and sometimes driven in government sponsored housing; Try to visualise if you'd fully legalize all drugs in Mexico.
If you can not yourself conjure a thousand situations where this small law can be used for wrong your fooling yourself.

Ofcourse I do understand the good ramifications and possibilities but speaking from one who have been in Mexico and know alot of Mexicans I think this would make it turn to the worse before it turns to the better.

I'm skeptical about this being beneficial because of the large neighbor to the North.

FossilClock

HA, HA

OH WOW

Everyone is going to consider this the greatest thing ever but the ramifications beyond the surface will be profound and painful to many.

But hey, who'll care?

We'll all be too stoned to notice.

AstronautClock

I'm with Sinister on this. You can't have a drug cartel if the drugs are legal. Or, you can, but they don't slaughter people over territory disputes. You have to realize, legalizing these drugs entirely would take away the vast majority of the Mexican mafia's income. Which would you rather have, open junkies or closeted junkies who give all their money to the mafia? Do you really hate junkies and cokeheads so much that you'd rather have the Mexican mafia prosper than leave them be?

PirateClock

Didn't Argentina legalize Marijuana while ago?

But with it being legal, this would just give the mafia, which already hold a large market in the illegal trade, to open a huge market in the newly legal one. I think propy is right. You guys can't compare european countries to Mexico. It is one of the most corrupt countries in the world, especially for an industrialized nation, the ramifications of legalization would be much different there.

do you expect everyone involved in the mafia to suddenly live honest lives? they will still find some way to earn money illegally and prosper because of it

Guess what happened when prohibition ended? The mafia lost control of the alcohol market. They didn't set up millions of liquor stores. They lost the source of income, because there were people who could sell it without ties to the mafia, and people would rather buy from someone they knew wasn't sending their money to them. By keeping it illegal you are giving them a monopoly on the trade.

Fluff. No one's compared them in this thread. How is the corruption in the country an argument against decriminalization? Saying the ramnifications are different also doesn't qualify as an argument if you don't specify what those ramnifications are.

Right, but not through drugs, which is what everyone wanted from them to begin with. And the mafia is nothing near as powerful as they were when they had a monopoly on alcohol.

That is all I can say in response, I am not an expert in Mexico, the Law they passed nor the drug cartells but from what I have seen and heard I don't believe this bodes good to start with.

If anyone wants to go expert on this leave me out of it, I don't know enough nor care enough to make a bad discussion thread about it.
