So I am learning how to flash

The program that I am in for school is teaching me how to flash with Flash 8

But we are actually doing things with Flash CS4

Is there any real significant difference between the two at all

I don't think there could be a bigger difference between two versions of Flash.
Flash CS4 has different methods for tweens, bones, 3D rotation tool, motion graphs, support for flex, ActionScript 3.0, different interface and a bunch of other shit.
Your school is dumb.

I haven't used it, but most of the new features seem to be ones you would only use if you're a dickbag that can't FBF. Which you'll probably be for a long time to come.
