Valve has a long history of hiring moders or paying them for their ideas at least. Team Fortress itself was originally a mod. left for dead was a mod of counterstrike and counterstrike was a mod of some other game. Portal was a digipen project.

I'm pretty sure the only Valve IP that they actually created themselves is Half Life.

team fortress was a half life mod (so was counter strike) the left 4 dead counter strike mod was made by valve, they talk about it in the developer's commentary

You can't say Team Fortress Classic and TF2 are the same though, it's valve's credit for the artstyle.

there's about to be fuckers on both sides playing poorly against the opposing class just to punch up the numbers. valve will be watching out for obvious shit like spam servers contributing 700000 points, but one player going like 1:9 ktd? there's no way to track that- they might just be terrible players.
