Hello clockfolk,

Its been ages since i had a watch and i kinda miss it. (plus a watch is the only piece of "jewelry" for men, if you disagree you must leave this thread)
I recently investigated some of the available watches on the market, and i must say i have no clue whatsoever to buy.

What watch(es) do you own? What watches do you like? Do you even like watches? What brands are affordable and still offer good en reliable quality?

At the moment my wishlist is composed of these two:

(but with different colored plate, white that is)

(cool chrono stuff)

i have a friend who has two six hundred dollar bulovas and  think that's ridiculous but i guess as far as watches go those are pretty cheap.

Just get married then you'll get to wear expensive jewelry every day.

SnakeClock

This is the watch I have right now:

I've had it for damn near twelve years. It still works great, but I'm going to need a cooler one soon.

A clock on my wrist?

Why does this sound kinky to me?

I haven't had a watch since I got a cell phone.

I'm not sure what image people are trying to convey with expensive watches in this day and age when you can get an exacting time piece for $10, but if I met somebody who had a really expensive watch I would just think they're stupid for wasting money like that.

To be fair, you don't have anything. Clocks are just machines that tick.

Reindeer

i still have my plastic pokemon digital watch, that is maybe 2 or 3 seconds off. except the strap is close to breaking.

same, except with my iPod.
There was a time when I wanted to get myself a pocket but all the ones that I came across are either too small or have a dumb design on them. Needlessly poncy or just for sissies. There is a watch from one of the wars in our possession that is exactly the kind I would like to have. Solid, durable works and fits in my palm perfectly but that is not a watch to use.

You might as well just use the thing.

AmberArachnidClock

First one's classy but the wristbands are kinda weird.
I did some searching and found this: http://www.watchtalkforums.info/forums/

I forgot to mention that it has not functioned properly for a long long time.

What's more important, looking good or looking expensive?

Though I'll admit all I look is practical. :p

I can attest to this

Also a nice watch is like a nice haircut. If you want to look like a slob, don't get one.

A watch is one of those unique items were the cost and brand make the difference in determining the quality or significance. A Rolex or BOSS carries more weight and clout than say something plastic and or digital.

Quality? Maybe 50 years ago. You can buy a piece of shit and it's going to keep time as well as your nuclear powered diamond crafted uberwatch. The only reason people buy expensive watches is because they actually believe what Clam was using as trollbait a second ago; if something costs more it is automatically better. Even if it's worse and looks like shit, if it costs more it makes you cooler to have it.

On a related note, that is the main business strategy of Apple and the only reason anybody bought an iPhone.

edit: You can still have a nice looking watch that doesn't cost a ton. I'm not saying to go buy a plastic pokemon watch or something, but a rolex is just stupid unless you're a multimillionaire who loves to throw away money on frivolous crap to keep up with the multimillionaire Joneses.

e (to your edit):  A watch, one you plan on keeping, should be of some cost. A good watch can stand the tests of time. Especially if maintainable.

A Rolex or BOSS may be overdoing it but they aren't all that expensive either.

Thor

Quote from: GingeraleClock;1683696So, in comparison to something digital and plastic - a ROLEX or BOSS is not better, in the slightest? I never said aesthetics were meaningless, either.

See my "edit". A rolex is functionally not going to be any better than other more reasonably priced watches in any noticeable way. The differences in actual time keeping are going to be so minute that you'll never notice and if a cheap watch brakes you can get them fixed too, or just replace them if you're REALLY going dirt cheap.

The only major upside is that you have the name brand. That's what you're paying for, really. Not the watch, or the looks, or any of that. You're paying to have the word "rolex" printed on it.

hurp a durp editing over each other
Alright I think it's worth getting a watch that looks nice but I think it's kind of petty to pay through the teeth for name brand stuff that's artificially expensive. That is all.
