Because Meyer is a cunt with no respect for literature

SpongeClock SquarePants

Quote from: SCSP;1695594srsly they dont even explain it?

Meyer argues that her vampires "sparkle" in the sun because they are "vegetarians". This might not be the reason, but I sure as hell don't want to actually look it up.

Quote from: FLOUNDERINYOBUTT;1837615I think Kodiak is the only person on  this entire website who dislikes Slurpee. I still dont understand how  thats possible. He\'s so loveable and funny. Every guy wants to be his  friend and every girl wants to date him. Understandably Slurpee is not a  very happy person.

Poltergeist

Quote from: Biblo;1696538Clearly you've never read Dracula

The vampire was originally a creature that went out at night and was sneaky because it could pose a threat to both the rich and the poor, and gave the elites something to fear as well. To my knowledge, vampires died in the sun because it was meant to be an exaggeration of the fact that corpses rot faster in the sun. Vampires stories predate Dracula you know!

Slurpee

my friend paul says dracula was the ultimate vampire story because it looked at the preceding folklore and examined what a creature that fit into those rough characteristics would have to actually be like (a real fucker, apparently) and its status as a fully realized and expounded upon fictionalized account of a mythogical/folkloric archetype is part of the reason why it's one of the very few horror stories to have entered the literary canon.

I've never read it, but that makes sense to me.

so anyway paul says that's why he feels that partly it's senseless to still be telling vampire stories in the 21st century, because at best they've only ever going to be applied to a "what if vampires crossed with x and symbolized y in setting z?" format, and they're never going to approach the literary heights bram stoker reached.

Silly Putty Clock

I'm writing a story right now for school, and I think I'm going to include vampires as minor characters. They definitely won't be the focus of the story. No, that will be my ghost ship of fascist orangutans.

Yes, but they weren't defined. Not really literature as such, (as Slurpee said) more folklore. Bram Stoker either made up or decided on most of the tropes that are now generally considered vampire canon. Dracula was totally able to go out during the day and in sunlight, but he only had his freaky ass super powers at night.

Plus I only said that because you said Meyer had no respect for literature by having her vampires around during the day, which is toss really. Vampire mythologies have never followed a strict set of rules. They'd be way more boring by now than they are if they did. Where vampires are most interesting is when a good writer takes certain rules and interprets them interestingly.

Meyer is not a good writer, I'm just saying it doesn't make sense to say she has no respect for literature just because her vampires can handle the sun, cuz... Dracula could.
