THE federal government has green-lighted its highly controversial censorship plan to introduce a mandatory internet filter that will block refused classification content from being accessed on Australian soil.

Basically Kevin Rudd has been inspired too much by China and is now bringing up a filter to block content.
Although it is intended for good use, I can't help but think that I am losing some of my freedom here and that this can easily be used in favour of a politicians opinions.
The fact that I do not actually have freedom of speech within this nation adds to the paranoia.

So in a nutshell.

DWARFINATORclock

In Soviet Australia the internet censors  you.

]:
new to do list
1. bill of rights
2. less censorship
3. become a republic
4. milk and bread

or I could excercise my dual citizenship and move to the LAND OF THE FREE AND HOME OF THE BRAVE

BootClock

The thing is they are using a blacklist to block sites and the list is limited to something like 10,000 sites. Obviously that isn't anywhere near large enough to really stop you from getting to whatever content you require.

Thor

Haha oh wow. I never thought Australia would sink so low.

What are you I'm a edgy teen? Is this how all of Australia thinks? Of course you're losing freedom and of course this is going to be used politically. Your country just lost a big chunk of freedom, and this isn't the first or last time. Hopefully the people of Australia are going to see what's going on and try to bring back some of their freedom.

To be fair, you don't have anything. Clocks are just machines that tick.

Silly Putty Clock

Yeah, go Lord Humungous on the government's ass.

The only reasonable response is a full scale revolution.

What I was getting at was that the intentions behind the filter do not seem to be dastardly yet it is clearly obvious that it can be used for such acts. (LIKE IN STAR WARS ANAKIN WAS LIKE I MUST DO WHAT IS RIGHT ONLY TO DO WHAT IS WRONG IN THE END BECAUSE HIS JUDGEMENT WAS CLOUDED WITH EMOTIONS)
I don't believe they should do it and of course I feel like I'm losing freedom and of course it sucks.
Some friends of mine are going to attempt a protest next week at Parliament. Everyone I've spoken to has been against the filter since it has been mentioned. The only people I can picture supporting it would be some bloody fanatics.
I really am feeling bad about this, I never thought that I would respond to the government like so.

It is one of the things I will be forever grateful for.

Thor

I'm normally not the protesting type but you should definitely protest with your friends. This shit is unacceptable. This is like the government declaring that only newspapers that they sanction can print, only worse.

I'd fly over and help out with the protest, but I can't afford it and I'm afraid of the wildlife. Also I have shit to do here. Really, though, you have to let the politicians know that this is unacceptable in a civilized nation. Don't move away, that's just pussying out. You have to take this shit TO THE FUCKING WALL.

I really want to blockade the roads around parliament with protests, make a giant metaphor.

Topcatyo

First video games and now this?  Jesus, Australia, way to blow.
Also, you guys have giant spiders and that's also pretty shitty.  You should protest those while you're protesting the Internet.

Silly Putty Clock

ITT: Australia is awful and who would ever want to live there.

The only conceivable reason for blacklisting is fascism.

I wouldn't feel too protected being just in the US.
