This time we're gonna do things a little differently and I'm gonna take an extra 3 days on this so folks can experiment with it a bit.

What I want you to do is very simple. I want you to do a color study for a background. This means that I want you to pick a whole bunch of colors, and sort of blob them together into the rough impression of a background. DO NOT actually draw the background, just suggest them. What we are looking for here is color and light. Feel free to convey any mood, or a whole bunch of moods.

If you don't get it here are some really good examples that can help.
Word of advice, if this is your first time you're not going to get it right. That's ok, the point of this exercise is to play with colors.

So this will be a 3 day long daily doodle. Remember folks use your imagination. Feel free to post mistakes, half assed jobs, quick ideas, and anything else that is short of perfect.

Don't be afraid to keep going. Maybe put some light sources in there or work out how you want to do the water to make it pop. This is a really great start!

I felt a little like, I wanted to put more detail in and try and define things a little more but I felt that would deviate from the point of the exercise.

Add as many colors as you want, just don't get wrapped up in shape.

Yeah, I'll give this a shot.  I'm actually quite happy, I think I'm really starting to get a feel for color.  Take, for instance, this comic I'm working on as a birthday present for a friend.
Linked since it's kinda big.
I feel that the colors are really eye-pleasing and I'm really starting to get the hang of shading and highlights.  I think the highlights in the first panel are the best I've done yet.  I'm still debating my color choice for the backgrounds in panel two.

Anyway, I'll give this a shot.

Tried to pick colors I haven't used before. Kind of succeeded, but could go further out of my comfort zone. Not much less shape-oriented than I usually draw. So either I failed to focus on color enough or I don't generally pay much attention to shape.

Like I said before don't be afraid to play around a bit more. I've been dong these exercises a lot lately and they really let you get a feel for what's going on before you decide to focus on the composition.

This is good right here. You got dulled down warm colors making the cool colors look brighter without going outside of an organic color spectrum. Is that triangle a light source? If so maybe try using some of those blues and see how they look up against that dark purple. If not that's cool too.

This is good right here. You got dulled down warm colors making the cool colors look brighter without going outside of an organic color spectrum. Is that triangle a light source? If so maybe try using some of those blues and see how they look up against that dark purple. If not that's cool too.
