Commander Shepard

So a teaser just came out for American McGee's Alice:Madness Returns, a sequel to American McGee's Alice. When the teaser came up, the internet apparently blew up at this. I have never heard of the original. Somebody want to explain to me what it is about and what's the big deal about it?
I\'m Commander Shepard, and this is my favorite forum on the Citadel

Slurpee

it's a dark and edgy adaptation of alice in wonderland by a bad game designer that people care about because they're dumb as hell

TequilaClock

BUT ITS SO DARK AND TRUE TO MY EMOTIONS SLURPEE CLOCK IT UNDERSTANDS MY FEELINGS OF DARKNESS AND PERCEPTION OF THE WORLD OUTSIDE CAUSED BY MY HORMONES AND CONSUMPTION OF HOT TOPIC MERCHANDISE

seriously though, never played the first one

peyoteclock

uh pretty sure the first one had bump mapping come on people

YoYoClock

I played the first one. It was a pretty irritating game. Lots of jumping over holes and getting annoyed coz you didn't run up right.
That was years ago though, maybe if I played it now i'd like it

What was that? I couldn't hear you over the sound of me cutting off peoples faces with a meat clever.

At any rate, I enjoyed the game when I was young, but I feel no need for a sequel or remake.

The first was shit imo, the only real thing I liked about it was the narrative.

but the sequel on the otherhand

oh my god wonderland looks so pretty!
Uh-huh

unfortunately that's like the one good screenshot.

One of my gay co-workers brought this game up the other day. He's a big fat obnoxious asshole who has horrible BO.

I'm going to assume he represents the targeted demographic for this game.

It's really too bad, I loved Alice in Wonderland the book so much, but it seems like everyone who adapts it stamps their own big ego into it, with really only one exception.

To be fair changes have to be made seeing as the plot of the book was just "Alex goes here and sees some stuff then goes over here and looks at other stuff"

Every guy wants to be his  friend and every girl wants to date him. Understandably Slurpee is not a  very happy person.

that's kind of the point, though, if it can even be said to have had a point.

she has a bunch of frustrating, confusing, and sometimes terrifying things happen to her, and comes out having learned and gained absolutely nothing.

A statement about the youth of the day perhaps! :sherlock:

Actually I think she does learn things, she just doesn't recognize it.

But what angers me isn't the changes to the plot. The 1988 Czech version of Alice changed the plot and it was fine.

No what does really get on my nerves will all these adaptations is that they all seem to lose sight of the source material. I think that the mental state of the people behind these projects isn't a desire to adapt the source material, but to present it's audience with familiar characters in a twisted (and in the creators mind "better") enviroment. Funnily enough, the original book was twisted enough, it was just subtle about it.

But it seems like the absolute best parts of Alice in Wonderland is absent in these remakes. The atmosphere, the subtlety, and the true madness (as well as the puns and number games if you like those too!). And because none of these things are present, the adaptations feel empty.

So why does this make me mad? Because people will see or play these things, and not read the book.

NOTE: The above post is aimed mostly at: American McGee's Alice, Alice (SyFy channel version), Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

Changes are bad unless they are changes that I like. Then they are just fine!

Nah, I'm just teasing. I'm just so happy that people still care enough about Alice to adapt it at all, that I don't fret about accuracy. So many people interpret Alice differently, and so many people have different ideas of what Wonderland is like that I try not to get wrapped up in stuff like that. I like to see it re-imagined, because if people tried to copy the book exactly, it would be stale. It just isn't something that translates well into film, in my opinion.
Besides, everyone has a different idea of what 'mood' Alice in Wonderland carries. That's what makes it such a good (couple of) book! For example, in my opinion, the 1988 version of Alice does not resemble the feel of the book at all, even though you find it to be the most accurate.
