Just use dirt to come back up, just jump and put a soil block beneath yourself, or simply dig diagonally.

don't go straight down, that's a terrible/cheap way and you can fuck yourself over that way. build some tunnels that go down pretty deep, and don't leave any spaces that aren't lit. there's nothing more frustrating than finding gold just to have a creep come up behind you and ruin your day.

the deeper down you go, the better chance you'll find some of the good stuff. lava that's near the surface is pretty much useless (unless you want to get a bucket or two for furnace power). dig deep, and if you come across bedrock for the love of god don't go down any more. you'll fall through the world.

Do it on top of a mountain during the day. You won't need torches then.

dig a shaft downward which is 2 blocks wide

If you feel like playing a build game Dwarf Fortress is free and much better IMO, if you can get past the learning curve.

I really want to play Dwarf Fortress but the learning curve is just so steep.  I'm afraid to try it. Plus I'd probably need a tileset and apparently that's only for noobs.  I saw these two russian girls stream it on /v/ and it seemed really fun, it reminds me of the original sim city but infinitely more complicated. And I loved the original Sim City.

wow ok so I expanded this natural waterfall which fell into a small deep canyon, I dug a small house in the wall, and basically filled the bottom of the canyon with water, put torches all around and it was awesome.

So I go up to the extention I made so the waterfall would be larger, and am messing around with the waterflow, covering up part of what I thought was the source to lessen the flow a little. All of a sudden the water just stops flowing and now my canyon is boring as hell. Does water run out? Water sources that come from mountains are kind of ambiguous.

Also I hate fall damage so much.
