Australia has a certain amount of money set aside each year for tourism advertising and events. The money that Oprah is spending is money that would have been spent for advertising anyway. The demographic that watches Oprah - rich women - are also the demographic that might go overseas for a holiday.

There are many towns in Australia that live or die based on the tourism takings. We used to live in one. We left because it was dying - there were no jobs, main street was half empty and growing emptier by the day, and services that were needed couldn't exist because nobody had the money to start them.

By getting Australia more publicity, and more tourists, it boosts the economy and means that those towns continue to exist.
