Quote from: RibsClock;1818671Well I do figure the whole attitude of self-righteous bloodlust and happiness at the suffering and death of others is more part of the problem than part of the solution. I do actually find the notion of seeing folks who are normally nice, kind, loving individuals cheering at someone getting killed gives more of a glimpse into the nature of man's capacity for evil than the relatively distant acts of some terrorist I've never had the chance to relate to.

And you're right, being a religious nutter probably does play a big part in that.

Yeah I mean I get all that. But that's not really what I feel. Like when I heard the news last night I was just kind of surprised and really happy because I honestly didn't think I'd see the day when he'd see any kind of justice (even if it was kind of a hit). I saw the people gathering outside the white house and it didn't seem malicious at all, just kind of like, triumphant.

Quote from: clammo;1818674umm i dont see whats so evil about people taking joy in seeing one of the worst people in all of history being killed. barring your opinion on death penalties, some people just dont deserve to live, and he was one of them.

thats your opinion!!!!

if it helps, and this is not specifically directed at you, but all the people that are feeling kind of jaded and cynical and not really feeling the fireworks:
the word is "closure".

it's not that we've been thirsting viciously for the tall orange wizard's blood over close to a decade of bloody vengeance.
well, not all of us, anyway.

to put it as neutrally as I can manage, bin laden represented humanity's deepest failures in the public conscience, and a lot of us were resigned to his presence forever looming as a grim symbol of unrestrained inhumanity.

he was where he was in part due to our actions during the cold war, and he hated us for our support of israel, and our military presence in saudi arabia- a failure of foreign policy and of diplomacy. he was a multimillionaire from inherited wealth- a failure of unchecked privilege. he believed he was killing in God's will, and hated us for not conforming to qutbism- a failure of religious belief.
clinton failed to capture him, a failure of military action. bush sat on the intelligence documents predicting the attack, a failure of national security.
then, over 10 agonizing years, bin laden remained a failure of our intelligence, and military prowess, a gangrenous hemorrhoid on the ass the world, a reminder not only of man's inhumanity to man, but our inability to set things right.

peripheral to that, 9/11 kicked off a terribly shitty decade.
war, recession, hurricanes, tsunamis, michael jackson died. I don't have to tell you, you lived it. the oughts sucked.
and now, it's like... we've put a button on all that.
and I know the war isn't over, and I know we need to be responsible and reasonable, and there are a lot of things we still need to worry about, and it's not going to be easy to get everybody's noses pointed in the same direction to really move forward, and I'm a big pollyandy douchebag that doesn't support capital punishment and thinks human life is sacred, but something has ended here. something BAD.
and we can be glad that it's over. I think we've earned that.

now if you'll excuse me

I can understand relief that closure has been reached, I'll leave it at that.

Quote from: F U Clock;1818668The Smashing Pumpkins album? Man what is wrong with Billy C's.

I don't really get why some people are like, "We shouldn't really be happy about this..." Maybe it's a Christian thing, in that seeking revenge is bad, but I mean the dude was an asshole that we spent years trying to hunt down and kill. Let the party resume.

But that's exactly the thing. So many proud Christians too are reveling at God losing another soul to the devil and gosh darn it it's really hypocritical.

Silly Putty Clock

It's revenge. Pure and simple. How many people lost relatives in 9/11? How many people know people that lost relatives?
Of course they're happy. It's human nature. The man that they hold responsible for hurting people close to them is dead. Let them be happy. There's precious little to celebrate these days. Why cheat them of the joy of vengeance?

Real talk, whether or not you think he deserved to die there's no argument he had it coming. I would have liked to see him captured alive to rot in a cell for the rest of his life. I suppose this is probably the second best thing. I'm not complaining either. He was a terrible human being who did a lot of terrible shit. I believe very strongly in karma, and clearly Osama Bin Laden got what he deserved. Now that he's dead people are going to celebrate, and eventually they'll put him in the history book next to Hitler, Nero, and all the other misguided assholes in history.

Exactly this except for the karma thing. From the sound of things though, the SEALs were prepared to take him alive, but figured he probably wouldn't go without a fight (and apparently they were right).

Quote from: RibsClock;1818712Nowhere near the number of people that are cheering and posting on facebook about how happy they are that he is dead.

Lots of people are enjoying themselves. This is a bad thing?

QuoteI've already said several paragraphs explaining why it is harmful so the "why" question is kind of superfluous unless you are implying that my statements are somehow invalid.

A party's a party.
It isn't that your statements are invalid. It's that they're irrelevant. Yeah, it's harmful. Did I ever say it wasn't? People are having a good time, and this is a rarity. In my mind, at least, fun is more valuable than human life.

EDIT: Fuck, that reads as horribly callous and borderline sociopathic. Horrible.
Look, what I'm trying to say is that it's rare for anyone to be honestly happy about something. Not contented, not complacent, happy. The cause of it is irrelevant. People are celebrating for once, and you're complaining about the morality of the celebrations? Fuck that.

YO YOOO new insights from F U Clock the main man from Pakistan:

I think part of the reason I and other people feel happy about this is when it comes to Bin Laden specifically Americans have felt like they almost never do - the underdog. Because he's attacked us, made us feel weak and defenseless, and evaded capture for years. I think when insurgents win a skirmish against US soldiers they celebrate because they're the underdogs and they've managed to kill what to them are superhuman - better trained, better equipped soldiers. In a weird way I think to us Bin Laden because this inhuman symbolic evil thing that over the years turned kind of intangible. I honestly didn't think we'd ever catch him and based on a poll I read today, most people didn't. So I think that's where a lot of the celebration comes from. It feels like the rebels at the end of Star Wars. Which is weird considering we're the Empire.

It's funny cause my newspaper has 'Thousands of families avenged' as a head title.

I wouldn't feel very 'avenged' unless I was the one to personally strangle him
