I am interested in learning flash actionscript.  I was wondering if someone could help me or at least send me in the right direction where I would be able to learn on my own.  I've programed in c++ and java so I m hoping I can pick it up relatively quick. So I can make flash games. Thank you.  Also si actionscript 3 better then 2 or just different?

Adobe provides resources that are pretty helpful if you make use of them.

3.0 is a technically more powerful language, with a different VM, support for hardware acceleration, dynamic 3d object support, and some shit that I don't fully understand and have no use for.

2.0 has more abstract, easier-to-understand datatypes, APIs, etc. but if you've worked with Java then this might not be a big deal.

Syntactically they're actually not completely dissimilar. I haven't encountered a situation where 3 would serve me better than 2, but I'm not much of a programmer.

I find AS3 makes you a better coder, and translates better to other code.

However, heart to heart here, flash is constantly on the edge of dying completely. Adobe has supported it terribly over the years, I myself am switching from AS3 to C# at the moment.

Telling someone to learn AS2 is like parents teaching their kids Anglo-Saxon as a first language.

Quote from: clammo;1874699I've made exactly one game in AS3, and I hated every second of it. Unless you're doing something that requires a lot of computer resources, using AS3 for a simple flash game is overkill.

It would be like dropping $1200 on a high end computer just to play quake 3.

Hmm I think Object Oriented Programming would be overkill for a flash game, but AS3 is really just a more organized AS2, you end up writing a similar amount of code either way as long as you don't go into OOP.

Clam i know what you mean, unfortunately i can't agree.
