I might be buying a secondary monitor for my laptop, so I can work between different programs (Dreamweaver and Photoshop for instance) and have them both maximized on a different screen.

I hooked up my dad's monitor on my laptop now and it's utterly confusing

The taskbar doesn't show up on the second monitor and if I say, open firefox it always opens it up on the primary monitor, even if the icon is on the secondary one. Also, because the taskbar only shows up on the first one, the programs running on the second one (Firefox right now) show up in the taskbar on the primary one.

To open something on the secondary monitor I have to exit fullscreen to drag it to the other monitor and maximize it there, quite bothersome.

I just want to make sure it really is handy to work with 2 monitors, and it would be much appreciated if you could help. I'm working with 2 different resolutions atm but if I really switch to this I'm most likely buying a monitor the same size as my laptop screen.

I use 2 monitors.

Just found it. I don't like how it puts the menu options below "close" because I right-click > close a lot. Also, that Maximize to desktop isn't really handy as my monitors have about 300 pixels vertical correspondence...

Owell, at least I don't have to minimize, drag and maximize again.

I think you can get rid of the extra buttons in the settings, actually.

I don't use the buttons either and every now and again I accidentally hit one of them and end up with a window all the way across the 42" of monitor I have. lol.

Yeah well if you look at my setup you'll see how utterly useless that function is to me, seeing as the monitors aren't lined up and one is higher than the other.


Edit - you don't use "move to other desktop" either?

I use 2 monitors, but they're also 2 machines, so that's kinda different. One mouse and keyboard, though.

Not really, Ultramon also adds a nice feature so you can just click on the top of a window and drag it on and it will automatically keep it maximized and stuff. That's probably one of the niftiest features. That and the ability to have 2 taskbars, each for the applications running on whichever monitor.

Yeah I only found the options menu just now, I hate programs that minimize an icon in the system tray. I'm used to searching for a "setup" file somewhere, lol.

Well I've set CTRL+` as my hotkey for switching windows, though the dragging fullscreen windows thing is pretty cool! I've built a startmenu-esque thing by using objectdock and turning the bottom left corner into a hotspot (aka the dock only shows up when you move your cursor to the very corner of the monitor).

And I've downloaded DisplayFusion to get a different desktop on both screens.

They say it's tough on your video card, but the only thing in my laptop that sucks is the video card and I've only experienced slowness right after booting.


How do you switch primary and secondary monitors though? Currently it's listing my monitor as primary and my laptop screen as secondary and it pisses me off
