Dhaktyla is greek for fingers. It's also a sweet, nutty pastry dessert. I made some today for the first time, although my mother and her mother have always made them.

Essentially they are pastry parcels of a mixture made of cinnamon, sugar and almonds. These parcels are deep fried at a very high temperature and are cooked within moments. Then they are dipped into a syrup (or traditionally left in the syrup for a while so it's soaks it up - but that leaves them too soggy and sweet for me. Just dipping them in for 30 seconds to 1 minute is enough, I find).

Here is them before dipping them in the syrup:

And here is after:

They probably don't appear very appetising by they are amazing.

Only thing is it took me 4 hours to make them. But it was fun, and I'm slow at cooking.

If you want to make them, the recipe is here: Page 1 | Page 2

They look pretty delicious, actually.

What's the flavour comparable to?

Slash

It's pretty unique. It's sort of like a crunchy doughnuty pastry that tastes deeply of caramalised sugar and almonds.

Traditionally they are not so crunchy, I think, because you're meant to leave them in the syrup for a while so they soak it up. But I find that sickly sweet and very heavy. Still delicious, but unnecessarily heavy.

Yeah it takes ages. But it's nice to do something like that every now and then.

I made more today though because that recipe I posted above makes twice or thrice as many as I needed. Which is a LOT.

Especially considering they are not exactly a healthy snack.

Topcatyo

Look delicious.  I'll get working on seeing if I can find/make any.

TequilaClock

The second picture reminds me of teriyaki chicken.

IvysaurClock

I like how the recipe book says that if you give them to someone who's actually cooked them before, they'll politely tell you that yours are crap.

Yeah, my mum's mum (Greek) makes these I think. Greek desserts are by far the best.
