Oh My Goodness, what great fun!

...

I WILL DESTROY YOU, I AM NOW ON 7700 WORDS

SnakeClock

Late-night post coming your way this time, and a less beefy word count: 2,015 words today, bringing my total to 6,058. Worked the closing shift at the pizza place today, so most of my writing had to be done tonight. I skipped out church over a sudden inspirational burst I couldn’t ignore once I was there; hopefully God will be glad to know that I introduced this version of Him in tonight’s excerpt.

It’s the morning after Phineas put the diamond on his heart, and he’s come out to greet the new day. Malcolm, Phineas’ best pal, is also introduced in this chapter; he didn’t have a story in Chapter One since he doesn’t really do anything to his heart that would need to be introduced (yet). At the moment, his appearance is expositional, but it’s set to expand quickly. Malcolm is my “accent” character; I like writing some character’s dialogue in a funny accent. Malcolm is supposed to sound a bit Irish, if the red hair and love of boxing isn’t a tipoff.

One of Phineas’ characteristics is that he’s very perceptive, sort of like me, which gives a lovely excuse to write detailed, lavish descriptions of things, which I quite enjoy. I’m worried, though, that my diction might be a bit heavy-handed, especially when I’m describing the Seamstress Cathedral. But no matter; it’ll work out one way or another. What do you think?

I also made Cindy’s part of the chapter less vivid, making it seem a bit like the way things are described are relevant to each character, possibly to their level of involvement or observance, or just how they are. Cindy is much less perceptive and detail-crazy than Phineas, so her segment of the story reflects that. Or maybe it’s just that I’m getting tired and don’t feel like extrapolating on the appearance of her bedroom would do much good.

With any luck, I’ll be able to post tomorrow’s entry before midnight, so I’ll technically have two entries for “today”.  Gotta get into the habit of getting work done in the morning, since now my nights aren’t usually free.

Considering I have a job and Poltergeist doesn't except for school (which has more access to writing implements he can sneak a few words in compared to my job as a pizza delivery guy), my word count is rather remarkable.

(Reposted from my novel blog... except the Poltergeist bit.)

IvysaurClock

I'm at 3k or so so far. I'm behindddd

Also, I had a friggin' excellent example of why not to presume you'll have every day available.
Yesterday, Chalk and I drove out to the shopping centre (around 20 minutes away) to get pomegranates and potatoes. Unfortunately, we never reached it, as our car broke down halfway, in the middle of fucking nowhere.

FIVE HOURS LATER, we finally got home. There was a notebook in the car, but NO FUCKING PEN.

So yeah, I wrote nothing yesterday. :(

I thought days that sucky only happened in the movies. :(

By the way, everyone should update their word counts on NaNoWriMo.org by mousing over "My NaNoWriMo" and then clicking "Edit Novel Info", or by punching in your word count in the little box in the upper-right corner when they turn it on this Monday. This will make it a lot easier for me to check up on your word counts and manage the scoreboard once I finish it.

Wind-up Clock

Whaaaa??? I'm only at about 3,900 words right now.

Damn. I need to get going.

And i have no idea what to call it. I just have it saved as Blue2.

Poltergeist

How about "Blue Circle?" I think you can do something around the idea that the world's completely blue now due to the ocean and sy and whatnot.

Also 11,050 words now, I had a little free time :P

SnakeClock

Man, Polty's going to have a boring November if he finishes his whole book in a week. _poogle_

Wind-up Clock

Nah, nah, that's not the point of the story. While flooding the earth is one of the motives for the alien attack (yes, the aliens attacking really is important), it turns to focus more on either finding one's wings on one's own or having them roughly stapled on by someone else.

Anyway, it's not all about the earth being flooded, although it's important.

Poltergeist

It may not be important, but it would make for an interesting title, no? My story also needs a name, it's a collection of four stories or so and its current name only relates to one, which I really don't like. It's great because the multiple story thing lets me switch to another when I get bored. Here's the start of one of them which I'm making my new exerpt:

I can assume you already understand that for a man such as myself to stumble upon a moral dilemma, it is very unusual to make a decision right away. First I find I must purely bask in the situation first. I must lay in the cark and flapdoodle of the situation. How odd that I, of all people, would come across a situation that is ethically challenging, of all things. A quarrel of justice, a confusion over rectitude, a conundrum of standards… This certainly is a wonderful and rare occurrence for me, one I find I must relish in.

Certainly you people would consider that every choice I make should contain a fracas of methods, and I assure you it does, I mean by this that I do not enjoy the things I do. No, this particular instance was that at the moment, I was not sure what the best course of action would be to entire my objective to the fullest. I had two selections, and in a prodigious display of my lack of omniscience, I could not decide which to take.

This foible of mine is most usual, and it rarely ever shows itself. This situation was one that was most unique, and very peculiar to say the least. Oh, what an intriguing life I lead.

If you don't understand why a moral dilemma is so odd for my narrator, it's because all of my stories are narrated by the devil.

Whoa!

Eh. Might as well proved an except from mine at least. My language is more casual.

Quote“Well, man is a creature of the earth.” Jake gave a sigh. “Still, I thought we could…”
â€œWhat? Decide that the earth wasn’t good enough anymore, sprout wings and fly off?” Cody flapped his arms about in an imitation of a bird. “Look, I know that you prefer the sky instead of the ground. It’s just that we have to put other priorities first instead of simply going with what we want.” Cody dropped his arms. “At least being here is safer than being out on a blimp. You might as well paint a large target that says ‘shoot me’ on it.”
Jake slumped his shoulders. One thing about Cody was that he had a knack for winning arguments. He seemed to be able to find any counterpoint to anything, even once when he was dared to convince people that totalitarian dictators were needed in society.
Cody noticed the disappointed look. “Well hey,” he said in an encouraging tone, “maybe one day we’ll find a wrecked shuttle or something and leave this place. Who knows, maybe some NASA projects could wash up here in the current.”
â€œIf we do that, then all we’ll be doing is providing a nice skeet target.” Jake’s calm remark surprised Cody for a moment, then the two laughed at the joke. Their laughter was cut off by a klaxon, followed by an announcement.
â€œFlights Red, Yellow, Green and Blue report to staging area 5 immediately. I repeat, flight Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue report to staging area 5 immediately.”
Cody clapped his hands. “Finally,” he said with a grin,” I was wondering when we’d meet those damn bugs.”

I like bug monsters :3

Also, the devil takes on the thought processes of whoever the main character in the story is. His "personality" never changes, but his expressions and word usage do. In one of my stories the main character is Leroy, and the devil is a far more casual narrator with him. The reason for this is the devil is shown to be an excuse for "imperfect thoughts" - all "bad" thoughts are "implanted" there by the devil, however he has to speak as the charracter does, because
A) The devil probably isn't real, but he assumes he is for the purpose of the story
B) If he were to just "imprint" thoughts however "he" speaks, you'd question the legitimacy of the thought
C) The devil does not know how "he" talks, and does not know if he actually has a personality or intentions

Wind-up Clock

The bugs are actually machines that the alien pilots merge with. It's just they never find that out because the bodies meld so perfectly they become indistinguisable from each other

QuoteAgain, for your convenience, another document is provided to give context to the situation. Here is the After Action Report of one of the first contacts with the alien invaders.

DATE: JUL 5, 55 AF(1)
TIME: 15:40
LOCATION: 50 MILES OFF OF FORMER UK
UNIT(S) INVOLVED: 060 FIGHTER WING, 2ND SQUADRON, 5TH FLIGHT
COMMANDING OFFICER(S): Russel, Lee (LT-1)
PARTICPANTS: Smith, William (CPL); Bagger, Johnson (PVT); Zimmer, Lance (SGT)
SECURITY CLEARENCE: CLASSIFIED

SUMMARY: 5th flight had encountered an unidentified aircraft and was subsequently annihilated.

PROCEEDINGS: 5th flight was proceeding normally on a routine practice patrol. We had finished our sweep of the last point and were turning home when our TEC(2) Zimmer picked up an unidentified object moving at high speed. We tried hailing the bogey on several frequencies but received no response. After it closed with us, we spotted something the size of a tanker aircraft, looking like a stumpy football with six legs. What first drew our attention were the four large, antenna-like protrusions poking out from the top of its body. Our a questions were answered when what can only be described as a hail of glowing light-bulbs erupted from one of the stalks and blew Bagger apart. We broke formation to engage, but it moved with surprising speed and agility and gunned down Smith with the light-bulb cannons. It turned around to take me out when Zimmer sent an SOS message on a high-band frequency, which seemed to disorient it enough long enough for me to let off a few missiles. They didn’t have much of an effect, since the bogey was covered in what seemed to be a deep blue chitin, but it was enough to shake it for bit. Zimmer let loose his drone fighter(3) to savage the bogey while we made our escape. We managed to successfully disengage from the bogey and returned back.

RESULTS
5th flight had encountered a new type of enemy. So far, any attempts made to properly identify this have been met with failure. Whatever we were facing against, it was big, nasty, and something I don’t want to meet again.

CASUALTIES
Smith, William (CPL)   -KIA
Bagger, Johnson (PVT) -KIA

(1)Stands for “After Flood”, since in the sheer terror if it, many timekeeping devices were destroyed, and nobody really wanted to keep thinking of the old days.
(2) Tail-End Charlie, the last craft in line in a 4-plane group, and usually carries the large sensor equipment.
(3) To supplement the fact that the TEC was weighed down with equipment that hindered his craft, they were usually allowed to bring drone fighters to do the fighting for them. The TEX usually was tasked with providing sensor data, a job that often left him isolated from his wingmen deep in the action. The drone fighter allowed him to fight while doing his job of keeping an eye out for the flight.

Would a footnote count towards the word count?
