I wouldn't disagree that today the use of the word in a referential sense would always be derisive if used by a white person, but I believe that freedom of speech extends to such derisive comments. However, someone can be convicted of hate crimes if they use the word, isn't that against free speech? Its use is different from someone shouting fire in a theater or bomb on a plane, because it doesn't cause a state of undue disorder, it is merely an insult.

Well I always assumed using it in a derogatory sense could be classified as intimidation based on race, which is a hate crime, which is also basically assault. (non-physical abuse, such as insult.)

In all actuality, any verbal insult can be called assault, and prosecuted likewise, but I'm pretty sure the use of ¥¥¥¥¥¥ makes it a hate crime.

People only want to use that word so they can quote Pulp Fiction without looking over their shoulder.

Actually I bet most people look around when no black people are around and say it for fun. The word carries no REAL meaning to us, so it's easy to just dismiss it as overreacting. The way I see it, it's so easy to just NOT say, that I don't really give a fuck either way.

On that note, my friend says Nig Nog all the time which I find kind of funny, I suspect it's because I find "Nog" to be silly. I'll search through my experiences which Egg Nog perhaps...

it is a type of racism. it's racist as fuck

but thinking about it that way isn't pragmatic because
1) it's negligible compared to the racism of using it against black people
2) black people are probably not going to stop using it until it stops being used against them, and that's not going to happen in the foreseeable future.
