So ever since I got this new video card, my processor or something has been going crazy

roman saves the day whoooooo
going to buy one of those and then i'll post back here and say how it didn't work and my computer still sucks
HELLO EVERYONE.

WiiClock

my new power supply came in today. the last one on the 3 you linked.
the processor is still running like mad after installing it.
soooooo... what now

That's one thing fixed. Now you should do some tests. Tell us what happens when the graphics card is not hooked up.

Unplug the video card and use the old integrated card?
Or unplug the card and turn the computer on?

Unplug the card from the power, if it makes noise (because it might make an annoying beeping noise) just turn off your computer and take out the card entirely (Only if you feel you can do it safely!) and then start your computer.
Then give us the readings.

If it still goes crazy, it's probably a driver issue.

(Don't worry about the PSU, its a good investment)

I don't think I understand what you're saying. Okay, I unplug the card. Then what does my vga cable go into? If I plugged it into the one on my computer, it would just use the integrated video card.

Also, the video card that I use doesn't require any power from the PSU through a cable.

Yea and? Is there something wrong with that? You still need to see what the processor is doing without the card.

If it doesn't help, there could be a few more things I can think of:
1. CPU fan isn't working properly and its getting hotter than it should. Get SpeedFan and tell us what the temps are.
2. The graphics driver has some kind of problem (wrong version maybe), if so download a new driver here
3. Some other program is causing a problem, in which case try booting in safe mode and see if the problem persist and report findings here.

Oh okay, you said readings, so I thought I was supposed to get some kind of BIOS screen or something. I'm at Driver's Ed right now and posting from my phone but I'll check these out when I get home.

Thanks for all the help Roman.
HELLO EVERYONE.

WiiClock

Okay well since the new PSU and the drivers, the CPU usage sits at around 50% now.
Which is better, but still not what it should be doing.

HELLO EVERYONE.

WiiClock

In safe mode,

...

edit: Wanted to make a note that even though the computer said it was using 0-3% of the CPU, it was still really loud.
HELLO EVERYONE.

Go to the Exotics Tab and click Show the Magic so I can see that (don't need safe mode). The thing about SpeedFan is that its not always easy to tell whats what, the Exotics tab helps by grouping them.

And the noise: What did it sound like and what was making it?

The next step will be to look at the software side like processes and etc. Safe mode CPU usage indicates its probably some non-essential component, or that there is some kind of compatibility issues.

RabidClock

could just be the cooling fan on either the CPU or GPU, did you completely remove the graphics card to see if it made the sound? Does it make the sound immediately after turning it on? Does the sound ever stop then restart?

Heliopios

I'm not entire convinced you actually checked your processes for any that were using large amounts of your CPU.
:]

Solenoidclock

Also it does no harm to a computer if you switch to a higher input voltage setting on the power supply than your region. What happens usually is it cuts your voltage in half, and your computer usually won't POST. It looks like a bad failure but you can just flip the switch back over.

I used to do that at work and make the IT people flip shit because they don't ever check the hardware thoroughly.

Also has anyone thought that the CPU usage might not be so much the problem, rather, it's just hella hot inside his case?

Seeing as the sound started AFTER I put the GPU in, I'm almost positive taking it out would stop the noise.
I'll go ahead and check right now though.

You could do me a favor and get a picture exactly like this but instead get one when the cpu usage is <90%?

I think this is sufficient on account of it's already beyond fifty and he's not really doing anything. I'd say the problem is with the almost forty processes not shown on that screen. Maybe vista is configured to hide that or something. I may never understand that OS.

Roman had me take that one for him.
He couldn't figure out what was wrong with it.
HELLO EVERYONE.

Solenoidclock

Sort by memory. I'm really suspicious of that svchost that's hogging all that processor time, is it still like that or was that just a fluke of the moment?
