I have been beating my head against BlenderNewbies.com for the last couple days. The UI for Blender is insane, but it is open-source so I have to love it. I'm working getting the basic down. It's just text animated over an AVI clip w/ sound. I hope to eventually make Clockcrew movies with blender .

Get 3DS Max or something. Blender stinks.

SnakeClock

I've been trying to get into Blender to expand my repertoire of skills, but really, Maya just makes more sense. :p

It's gotta be open-source and run natively in Linux.:dork:

maya is a far superior package and runs on linux but is not open source. BUT WHO GIVES A SHIT ABOUT OPEN-SOURCE

so does softimage, cinema 4d and houdini.
p sure those would be easier to learn and you can produce better results with them.

Well I bet your OS or game console isn't as good as mine.

this is kind of different though, these are actual products where their advantages over each other DO ACTUALLY MATTER.
Blender can produce some amazing stuff and can be tailored to suit your needs but that requires PROGRAMMERS or PROGRAMMING KNOWLEDGE which not everyone has.
Out of the box it doesn't really compare to other 3D packages, plus the interface is relatively more confusing and that can drive people away.
And from my knowledge, some of the decent animation studios that do end up needing their software tailored to their needs make their own.
SO REALLY in term of AMATEUR 3d modelling, blender IMO is not as good as 3ds Max or Maya. I can't say much for the others.

Free Open Source tools are important when you are in a cooperate environment where your applications and licenses are remotely audited.

The Spoiler

I've tried Blender a few times, but overall I like Wings 3D more. Wings 3D doesn't have as many features, but in my opinion it's easier to work with. If you've got to use Blender because of features that it has and other Free Software modelers don't (or for any other reason, really), make sure to check out the interface tutorials on the main website, if you haven't already.

PaperClipClock

i use blender for texturing or doing mechanical sculpted objects for second life.  i usually use zbrush for organic objects which are most of my 3d projects. blender can be a great tool past the learning curve which people complain about but it wasn't very apparent for me. just youtube some tutorials.

Try experimenting with color ramps, and change the color of your light source. Why would you want to eat a gray pretzel‽‽‽
