The hardest part about things like this is realizing our own mortality, I suppose. Keep your head up and keep your loved ones close, they'll pull you through it no doubt.

Soup Clock

I've dealt with death on several occasions so I'm used to getting over all of that.  The hardest part for me is thinking to myself that maybe if I had done something differently this situation wouldn't have happened.  I've heard it all around that I can't go blaming myself for it, but I talked to her minutes before she was stabbed so it's difficult to do.  The last thing I said to her was that I spotted her ex-husband outside and that's the point that she turned and walked out to talk to him.  I feel like if I hadn't said a thing she never would have walked out there in the first place.  Though the news articles have said that he was planning this for some time, I still can't help but feel that maybe he would have reconsidered should I never had let her know he was there.

All that said, it's going to be rough going to the funeral on Saturday.  Plus, her 4 kids will be there.  Thankfully I'll have the support of friends and coworkers there with me.

Also, please don't refrain from making jokes just because this is a grim situation I'm in, the silliness and all of that you guys provide is kinda therapeutical in a way.  And for the record, we were not out of Wawa Lemonade Iced Tea.  I had stocked it earlier that night.  He was probably pissed because we ran out of cucumbers.  Also, print out tiny pictures of his face, they make good thumb characters.

wawa are for the people, its not any one person's wawa. Its the community's wawa.

AnkhClock

We don't have Wawa's where I live so I feel like I'm missing out.

Topcatyo

Sounds like a horrifying experience.  I can't do anything but offer my condolences.

As for telling her about her husband being there, she had a restraining order and you let her know the husband was there.  As FU said, you warned her if anything.  I dunno if you can take comfort in that, but certainly don't blame yourself for this.

AmberArachnidClock

shit dude, you have my condolences.

As much as I'd like to bash the cops, I have become quite close to a lot of them while working the night shift.  Corporal Carr is one that I haven't been very well acquainted with as he's generally that loner type that doesn't interact with very many people, even those on his own team.  He's one of those "I'm doing my job, I don't care for much else" type of guys (which is one of the reason why we're afraid of him, because this also makes him relentless and he won't turn his head just because we know him).  But I really can't blame him for sounding stupid in the conversation.  I live in a very placid, do-goody town that nothing like this ever happens and I'm sure he was just as shocked as we all were that someone was murdered right down the street.  I gave my written and vocal statements to 2 of the guys that I really know on the squad and I kinda joked around a bit with them asking how many books they had to dust off to deal with a murder.  Typically all they get is a few high kids trespassing and a DUI here and there.  Other than that they wait for speeders.  This was the first murder that UUPD has seen in 5-7 years.
