Alright Clocks... it's approaching that time again.

The question has come up every election on whether the process is actually working or whether the 2 year old Charter simply needs revisiting.

The staff obviously will not change the process without community feedback because it could easily stray into a conflict of interests situation... and the boyz and I don't roll like that. We do however want to open this topic up for discussion.

Do you like the elections? Do you think they succeed in getting us the best of the best to manage the forum.. or are they BS popularity contests? What about the nomination process?

Want to keep them? If yes, does the way we do them need to change at all? If no, how would you like staff to be appointed?

Thoughts. Spill em.

PhantomCatClock

I don't remember the process, which means it didn't stand out as outrageously unfair enough to be remembered however many months later, so yes

AnkhClock

I like the staff we have now, which suggests the process we use is working, so let's keep it.

FLOUNDERMAN_CLOCK

If I keep getting elected the system is clearly flawed.

VCRClock

These elections are an important BS popularity contest, because if the people who won CC elections weren't all tiara-carrying prom queens, people might want to leave :(
<Marlin Clock> This thread seems proof positive that divisiveness at any level is usually bad for the Clock Crew.
<PhantomCatClock> are we talking about the same clock crew

Lump Clock

Soon we will be able to re-instate of dictatorial regime, gentlemen.

Oh fuck this isn't the grid.

buttplug

Do a haltman or soemthing else obnoxious so I vote

Marlin Clock

Popularity comes into play somewhat, but with the staff's ability to eject inactive mods I think we've created a pretty good system of putting those who want to contribute in power.

AstronautClock

smod me and dont change anything else

RobClock

Last year i included a butt option on my nomination poll, as the year prior it had been, to my knowledge, permitted as a non-sequitur option. However, it was counted as a 'no' vote against the nominee.

I'd just like some clarification as to what happened to our rights and freedoms on this forum I THOUGHT THIS WAS CLOCKTOPIA??

Seriously though, keep the elections. I feel they're necessary to keeping things fresh around here.

AbbaZabaClock

With the way things are here I can't complain.

Change is bad.
Nobama.

yes we scan :saywhat:

Topcatyo

I say we change our election system from the "haves" to the "have nots". All the cool kidz are put on the "haves" and all the people who haven't proven themselves yet or just aren't cool yet are the "have nots".

Basically clockficiation but without the bullshitting.

pop-tart

Toppy.. elaborate on your idea if you are serious?

The reason we bring this up is because we don't know if the process is working. We had to appoint two smods this term because two elected weren't able to commit.

When you guys vote.. do you look at the information available to you? Do you look at how often the candidate posts? How active they are in projects? If they are an incumbent, do you view the motions history to see if and how they vote on things you care about?

Again, I'll bring up the nomination process. Does the current procedure work for everyone.. or do you think that it compresses how many people can run?

How do you want votes tallied? The run-off system that we currently use (designed to allow you to rank your choices so that ties are less likely) or do you want just a popular vote?

How about incumbents automatically being on the ballot? Do you think there should be terms limits for any of the positions?

AstronautClock

look at all my awards does that mean nothing

I think the tiered system is the best considering ostensibly we are voting for eight equal positions that then internally vote in the admins, so the idea of putting thought to who we thing is better for said position relative to the others makes sense.

The nomination system seems fine as well. I don't think we should have too many people on the ballot as that'd just diffuse votes, making ties for the contested seats more likely.

AbsintheClock

This is my own personal opinion, and I'm not going to go enforcing it on anyone without the approval of the community. That being said, in my perfect paradigm of a staff here is how it would go.

Elections I think should be abolished mainly because we have a good solid core of staff, and all the admins work together. I think that the Smod spots should be slashed down to 4 in order to pass motions faster, and because the activity of the bbs doesn't warrant that many people. I reject the notion that this is a popularity contest, because the core guys get voted in the same pretty much every year. I'm also not threatened by the idea of losing my spot, or any of the other admins losing their spot because I know it's not going to happen. For the past 3 election cycles it's been pretty much Me, Pops, and Pat in the top 3. I don't think it's because we're the coolest or anything like that, we just get it because we're doing something right. In fact I think the whole election is just an awful distraction from a bunch of other shit we could be doing for September and March. There's always to some degree hurt feelings from somebody, and there's always problems. We can avoid that, or we can keep flexing the democracy machine on our little community. As for the other smod spots, with all due respect, you guys kinda suck at picking folks. Every election cycle we end up having to boot out two guys, and put new guys in. I think the people that we filled in for the spots we cut before have done a good job. If I had my way I would have the following members filling in the four smod spots.

Flounderman: This guy engages the community, he's participated in every collab, he's always on the blast, votes on initiatives, and says his two cents.
MFC: When this guy is not on my team he is a royal pain in the ass. That being said he's effective as a staff member. He's well respected, he votes, and he does a good job handling the ban stick.
Lump: He's done a decent job as treasurer, and he's done a decent job on staff. Why fix that if it ain't broke
Abba: This guy isn't on staff, but with the little power that we've given him he's gotten more work done than half the staff we've already got. He also reminds me when I forget shit.

I did not put Trop on here, because I think he would be far more effective on staff if we kept him for coding and graphics full time. I think by this next cycle we should try to put some new positive changes on the look and feel of the site. I think that without the distraction of BBS bullshit, he can get it done.

Once again these are just my opinions, not something I'm going to enforce.
