Last month I read Catcher In The Rye.

Reading this is making me depressed about how I would never know if any of this stuff comes to be. It is very interesting though, even if I am not sure how plausible it is.

Quote from: Frenchy Kitty;1471839define substance, and if you say "plot" you've lost before even stepping on the track
well if plot is out of the question, what the hell am i supposed to pay attention to? the characters didn't interest me, the concept/theme is your same old "technology will destroy us all" crap, and at the beginning i really expected the movie to be a really good epic. instead i get a huge 2 hour snorefest.

but hey, i'm biased about this kind of stuff, so feel free to insult me

are you that single minded that you can't follow something without a really obvious plot to hold your hand? "same old technology will destroy us all" didn't apply in 1968, it's only "same old" because 2001 is so influential.
the visuals and soundscape are so fucking perfect i can't imagine anyone who isn't hypnotised by it.

(this part goes for everyone)
if you don't like it, fine, but don't be stupid about it.

They feel threatened, for potentially being singled out as dumb for not liking it, similarly to how you (or I) feel threatened for potentially being singled out as pretentious for liking it. Let's remain civilized, what what.

you aren't pretentious for liking it

also, they are dumb for not liking it.

Biblo

They're not dumb for not liking it. But they're dumb for saying stuff like:
"The spaceship is flying man! It's flying! Woah! It's flying to the thing! It's flying... it's still flying! There is a spaceship and it's flying! No, no, no, wait... there's a floating ballpen! There is a ballpen and it's floathing in the air! Oh now a stewardess puts it back into the pocket of the sleeping guy! Okay, enough excitement! Here's some more footage of the spaceship! And in a really unforeseen plot twist, it's still flying towards the thing! My mind can't take the excitement anymore!"

i love how the word pretentious has come to mean "thinks he's smarter than me"

DigitalLemonClock

Quote from: Franklin G. Hamilton;1471907right if i dont like something it must be because i dont get it

if you equate liking that something to being part of "the pretentious artsy faggot douchebag circlejerks" I would say you are quite possibly not seeing the whole picture

I would agree though that it is an overrated film in the sense that there are lots and lots of people who seem to proclaim their love for it mostly because they feel it is expected of them

2001 is probably my fav film and honestly i feel sorry for people who cant appreciate works like this just because they dont follow a conventional plot.

This one evening I flipped past 2001 a couple of times and I thought it was a real-time live stream of a spaceship flying to mars.

I do have to admit I couldn't get through it the 2nd time I watched it. I enjoyed it the first time, but I knew what was going to happen the 2nd time and couldn't wait through some of those scenes.

Quote from: Franklin G. Hamilton;1472050how is thinking that hes better than people like me or patriot because he likes a certain type of movie or votes left not the definition of pretentious

my point is that it's very easy to fire the word pretentious at films, music or people as an automatic defense mechanism because people tend to back-track once they've been labeled with it. i'm getting pretty sick of seeing films and music with the mildest hint of intelligence (especially films that don't spoon feed the audience) having the word pretentious slapped all over them by morons who refuse to believe that someone might think about something longer than they do. (i'm not saying you're one of these morons, i'm just saying this use of the word has stemmed from them)

Quote from: DigitalLemonClock;1472080I would agree though that it is an overrated film in the sense that there are lots and lots of people who seem to proclaim their love for it mostly because they feel it is expected of them

quite often that is assumed by people who don't like it. yes, there are those who claim to like it because they feel they should. but there are also those who are genuinely excited by it and those who don't like it usually assume that that excitement is fake.

Poltergeist

Quote from: Raleigh St. Clair;1472301One thing I liked about 2001 is that they actually paid attention to the fact that sound requires a medium to travel through.

Yes, and also the gravity ring was quite cool, along with the ship turning so it looked like the other ship wasn't. It was filled with great science nerdisms.

Also pretentious is a really good word stop overusing it

Quote from: ChimeClock;1471901well if plot is out of the question, what the hell am i supposed to pay attention to?

you've clearly never read a book or seen a movie with sbutext, undertones, a message, symbolism or a movie with plot explored through those.
