CONTAGION - 7/10

A kind of cool and realistic movie, creepy at times, and I liked some of the characters like Matt Damon and his daughter, but it bothered me how many characters just disappeared from the movie. Not just died, of course, but the movie just forgot about them. They forgot about Elliot Gould after he isolated the virus,, the guy that Cameron Diaz was cheating with in Chicago, the scientist who invented the vaccine, and even Marion Cotillard when she was running back to the Chinese village! Why would they forget about her WHILE SHE WAS GOING BACK??

Maybe it just adds to the "realism" that all these characters were cheerily dispensed with, maybe used to emphasize the randomness of real life and only define their roles in the pandemic, but if this movie aspires to be "realistic", then why does it keep focusing on Laurence Fishburne and that little janitor's kid? You can't be realistic and sappy.

The best part was the soundtrack, though. So damn weird.

Rich kids whine about their problems and unexplained "schizophrenia". Zach Galafiackis has a role as an unfunny homeless man who doesn't even talk. Zoey Danschel is cute and you get to see her nude from like 30 feet away. Quirky characters that fall flat

I liked the movie, but I'm pretty reluctant to recommend it to people. It's the sort of movie that some people love, and a lot of people hate. But you might as well give it a watch, just in case you are the type who will love it. You might want to look up the trailer on youtube, and decide if that looks like the sort of thing that you would want to watch for two hours.

It was good at depicting an epidemic, often it was incredibly creepy and tense. I just didn't like how characters kept disappearing from the movie and being forgotten about.

She ran unimmunized away from her employer, because she found out the children in the backwater Chinese village she'd been shown to be developing an emotional bond with had just been lied to and told they were being inoculated against a deadly illness when they weren't, and presumably the village was now going to be exposed to the disease after ending their self-imposed exile. The filmmakers didn't forget about her, they wanted you to draw your own conclusions.

It was meant to combine with the other closing character arcs for an encompassing emotional resolution. I thought it was executed beautifully.

Oh, I see. This might have been more effective if they showed it after Laurence Fishburne gave his vaccine to the janitor's kid, rather than before. I was also kind of annoyed that the people actually involved in finding the vaccine, like Elliot Gould and Jennifer Ehle, were just kind of pushed aside. I did like Kate Winslet's character, though.

Also, how did you find the Jude Law conspiracy theorist character? He seemed a bit goofy for a film like this.

Yeah. I heard it put that it seems like the character wandered over from a Roland Emmerich film. I thought that was a really apt way to put it.
