Why does the opinion of the guys from Smosh matter?

Hello! Dreamworks Animation started out with awesome Bible epics like The Prince of Egypt and Joseph: King of Dreams! I absolutely adored the animation style they used in those movies! It was unique, dynamic, edgy and evocative, befitting grand adventures like the liberation of the Hebrews, the trials of Joseph, the quest for El Dorado and the voyages of Sinbad the Sailor!

That was before William Steig gave them Satan's number and they sold their eternal souls to make Shrek.

Truly, before their fall, they were doing the work of the Lord.

I beg to differ. It was worship expressed with great grace and heart in that one movie. We didn't want it becoming another Ten Commandments or Cleopatra here.

Did you know it was the highest-grossing non-Disney animated film before The Simpsons Movie topped it eight years later?

TequilaClock

I liked the Prince of Egypt, it had a very nice style for my taste. And many browns and blues. I love those colors.

SnakeClock

I loved the way it depicted Passover, and the Parting of the Red Sea looked as epic as it probably was.

I really should watch that movie again. Remind myself of a happier time, when Dreamworks really did make dreams. :p

Also, does anyone remember Titan A.E? I mean, the plot was no good, but the animation was top-notch.

EDIT: Oh, wait, that was Fox, not Dreamworks.

That was Don Bluth's last movie before he had to go help his dysfunctional family in California after his father got arrested.

Erm... or it just didn't turn a dime, it became Fox's animated version of Cleopatra, and they switched to Blue Sky Studios for all their future animated projects. It's a damn shame, too; Titan A.E. was indeed a killer film.

Poltergeist

Pixars next movie is set during the 1906 san francisco earthquake. I am not making this up, it will probably be awesome.

One could be a short film...?

But it would be a treat if they released both in the same year.

Quote from: TremcladClock;1396836The fact they're kids' films doesn't exactly rationalise it, seeing as the 2002 Spider-Man film went on to see two sequels with a third confirmed, Ironman already has a sequel in the works and anything else that goes on to experience above-average success will undoubtedly go on to be graced by a number of  unnecessary sequels that will be viewed by an international audience. Even with something like Shrek, it would be foolish to assume that when the first film (which actually had an ounce of creativity behind it) was assembled, the creator had planned and written out a whole series to follow it.

Film industry capitalism does a fine job of forcing art and creativity out of the picture. It's fairly depressing for anyone who follows film as an art form.

i would say capitalism sucks the creativity and art out of everything it touches

here's some things related to stuff said in this thread:
1. I don't believe the kids like dumb stuff argument for films like this existing. Kids let an awful lot of dumb stuff slide because they have low expectations but I believe the reason Pixar and Disney have done so well is because they have wonderful stories and direction and they really get people (including children) involved. A kid might happily sit through Shrek 4 or TMNT or Cars (which I thought was bollocks, mostly because of the awful design) but they'll never love them as much as the ones that we would consider to be good.

2. Oh wait if kids are dumb enough to sit through these films then that is the reason they exist whoops. I think what I meant to say is that Pixar films aren't good because the writers are smart and stick in little nods to the adults, they're good because they have great stories and stuff.

3. The woman who directed the Prince of Persia is directing an upcoming Pixar movie called the Bear and the Bow, which is nice because she's very good!

4. I didn't think Shrek 3 was all that terrible it was just a little bit depressing because it was smashing up these once lovable characters, much like new Simpsons episodes.

I loved that movie; Chel was an awesome character. I made some animations with her when I was in school.
