Basic production went like this:

Guy 1: "Holy shit guys! Guess what? You know that thing where we released a bunch of old Mario games for the Virtual Console every week?"

Guy 2: "Lol yeah. I love that idea of translating games instead of working on a new one.'

Guy 1: "Turns out this one, it was like... Super Mario RPG or something... well a lot of people are buying it, and they like it!"

Guy 3: "Really? They like possibly one of the greatest ideas ever created? Wow, how weird!"

Guy 1: "So I was thinking... if they really like it, then they'd probably buy a NEW version right?"

Guy 2: "Hey YEAH! That would be amazing! We'd get a whole BUNCH of sales!"

Guy 3: "We can even clone the game like we did for the first two Paper Mario games!"

Guy 2: "And we'll use Sonic! It'll be amazing!"

Guy 1: "We should put it on the DS so we don't have to make good looking graphics!"

Guy 2: "Then we can have it controlled through touching the screen, so that will be EXTRA FUN!"

Guy 3: "OH OH OH! WE SHOULD HAVE A TRADING CARD SYSTEM TOO! BUT INSTEAD OF CARD WE CAN HAVE CHAO!! THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE SO ALL OF THE KIDS WILL BE EXCITED THEY GOT THE REFERENCE!!!"

Guy 1: "OMG THATS SUCH AN AWESOME IDEA!"

Guy 2: "We can get a popular game maker to help boost the coolness! We could also make some brand new totally awesome characters and sell their rights to the other company!"

Guy 3: "OMG THAT IDEA IS SO BRILLIANT!"

Guy 1: "Alright, that was an awesome revelation. Brb gatta fap to sum furry hentai l8r"

Regardless, I think I might get the game anyhow.

You DO know that Sonic Chronicles was announced in 2006 before the Virtual Console was really anything, right?

You didn't? Then shut up. And also you are assuming that Bioware, the developers, are a group of uncreative shills that Sega got on for developer recognition, similar to how Lucasarts put them on for Knights of the Old Republic. Kindly shoot yourself.

The Chaos sound more like the badges in Paper Mario than trading cards to me, and they worked out fine. But whatever.

I'm looking forward to it, though, if only to see how they could mess it up. It probably won't be in the obvious ways you outlined, though.

Sonic was always a creature of marketing. When you remove the element of the half-decent gameplay, that makes it doubly bad. :(

-You collect and trade Chao online. That would mean its like baseball cards.
-I never said that Bioware wasn't great, they've done some nice stuff. I'm just saying this seems to mimic the entire thing that happened with Super Mario RPG, and it'll probably end up like a wannabe.
-Pardon me for not knowing it was in E3 2006. It had said it was the best rpg game of e3 2008.  That one was my bad.

It looks nice, but I just highly doubt it can really surface as a good game. There's just so much that could go wrong, and more that looks like is going wrong, it's hard to get really excited about it. It still feels like it was a remake of Super Mario RPG, when they should have made Super Mario RPG 2 instead. Not only that, its that Sega's recent Sonic games have been shooting out at us, it's hard to say which one could be good. There that "Unleased" title they are supposed to be working on, and that stupid Sonic-Gots-A-Sword game they spit out... I've lost a lot of faith in Sega, so they're going to need more than just a few cruddy videos to tell me how good this game might be.

Has anyone watched any of those? Pretty pitiful, really. They explained how Sonic will be more like an RPG, by telling us what an RPG is. "There will be things called "Healthnuts", that will replenish your health meter." Well, one would assume so.

And hasn't Sega tried to make an RPG before? I think Bioware is a little more than just a "Oh sure, we'd love to help you with this RPG".

Poltergeist

I thought it looked okay

Turns out it isn't. Dang.

Also anyone else think that a Donkey Kong RPG would just feel so right?

peyoteclock

forget that it's sonic, bioware rpg on the ds, i'm sold.

kotor, mass effect, BALDUR'S GATE, neverwinter nights, they have an amazing track record with rpgs, i have 100% faith in them, quit being a whiny fan boy, the game is going to be good, even if it is sonic.

Il Duce

Gametrailers guy: THIS IS GOING TO BE THE BEST DS GAME OF 2008 BECAUSE BIOWARE IS MAKING IT

WreckingBallClock

Sure, BioWare makes wonderful things. But obviously you haven't seen how bad Sonic can make something.

I like werewolves less because Sega thought Sonic would be cool as a werewolf.

Breamcast

I actually like how the new sonic games are looking like:

Sonic unleashed (even the werehog parts) look  fun.

Sonic Chronicles looks decent.

and you know what?

Sonic and the black knight looks pretty cool as well.

Dude... no, nevermind.

FLOUNDERMAN_CLOCK

Eggman is referred to as Dr Robotnik in this game I hear. That's enough to warrant a purchase.

Kombucha

Sonic is Sonic in this game I hear. That's enough to warrant no purchase but perhaps looks of disgust from me as I walk through the electronics section at the store.

MasterClock

I've heard this is basically Super Mario RPG but with Sonic Characters.  Sounds neat.

I've heard it got a little of Elite Beat Agents style too

78% on Game Rankings is pretty good in my book. IGN are a bunch of wankers anyway.

You deserve a slap.

FLOUNDERMAN_CLOCK

The werewolf game was originally sonic adventure 3, it might be good.

If it's an RPG I might just skip it,but add an action elements to the RPG and I might buy it

:suicide:

It will at least be better than that shit-biscuit that was Sonic the Hedgehog for the PS3. I bet they made it to lower our expectations for this one.
