This is why I advocate economic and marketing business classes as a requirement in high school. People don't know how money works.

When you pay more taxes, it means businesses pay more taxes. When a business has to pay more there are 3 options: Cut people, lower wages, or increase price. Any of these solutions will lead to the consumers needing more money to buy what they need. Now, you have extra taxes and spend more on the same things, so you aren't saving any money. In exchange, the government provides sub-par benefits. The problem with the government providing benefits is its way of handling money through bureaucracy, which tends to waste/lose money.

Of course, people could always stop buying unneccessary shit like Guitar Hero. I bet that would both save a lot of money and have a positive effect on the cesspool of modern "culture".
