you know, I make fun of japanese games a lot, but it's probably wrongheaded. what actually irritates me and what I'm actually making fun of is when we're expected to invest in characters that are utterly inhuman in their behavior (and then some annoying weirdos actually do and then terrible things become popular and critically acclaimed and augh), which western games are equally guilty of, just in different ways, and which a lot of japanese games have done right. the mother series comes to mind. also nier. nier was good.

4chan /a/ got the idea from a hypothetical VN idea in the back of some hentai one shot manga, and there were threads brainstorming about it for like a year and eventually enough people willing to actually work on it got together and made it. Apparently the final team developing barely had any 4channers on it. Why the hell did this get finished but Crab Nicholson Extreme Sleepover Text Adventure was abandoned. I guess /v/ just didn't have enough time between complaining about video games and masturbating to gardevoir. I can relate I hate cutting into my daily 12 hour garbodor fap sessions.

That's why it got popular in the first place. Normally your average otaku doesn't give a shit about VNs, but because this was a foreign made freeware one, people got interested. Plus there was the whole controversy angle. I can't tell you how many times I was called insensitive when talking about the game, it was like I was on reddit, or at least what I imagine being on reddit is like.

Just got home from Desolation of Smaug. It was pretty rad. Better than Unexpected Journey by a fair margin. Smaug looked/sounded fucking awesome.
