what people don't realize about the spinning beach ball of death is maybe 6 or 7 times out of 10 if you leave it alone for a while, it eventually goes away, and the task is completed. it's a "wait" icon. it can take hours or days but if what you're working on is vital, patience is your ally. turn off automatic sleep, let the display rest, and go have a cup of coffee. read something. catch up on your dvr. learn a magic trick. when you force-quit because of the beach ball you're taking a problem that will sort itself out and turning it into a straight up crash.
