Okay Undertale was pretty great.

It's pretty amazing how much work went into it. I'd call it overmade, even. An optional epilogue letting you wander around hearing new dialogue from every character in the game world? It's just a crazy amount of writing, and most of it very good writing.

The dodging-attacks mechanics were changed up again and again, staying very fresh. But diplomacy was just trial and error, basically. For a game that boasts about nonviolent solutions in its tagline, it doesn't really make those solutions mechanically interesting. Instead, it relies on the strength of the writing.

So, to win nonviolently, you hit the "act" button, then you're presented with options A, B, C, and D. The solution is to press C three times, dodging attacks in between. You figure this out by trial and error.

But it's satisfying because the wrong answers were jokes, and the right answer was funny and surreal, and now you get some great dialogue as a reward and a new persistent character in the world.

I'm just trying to parse this all out because I'm working on a game about diplomacy, and I want to figure out what I can learn from UT. Honestly, I'm not really any good at writing comedy, so I feel like most of Undertale's solutions won't help me with my project.

ya got a bum ticker
|/
wow, i just returned to this thread, and i just realised that:
he was saying a ''bum TICKER'', not a ''bum ticket''.
ticker is the heart, so yes, i got it now.

but for some reason that day, i didnt saw ''ticker'', and after a quick glance i thought that it was saying ''ticket''.

needless to say, when i saw phantomcat's interpretations for the term ''bum ticket'', i was laughing for 3 minutes straight.
my eyes are full of tears now. (from laughing too hard.)

thanks, phantomcat, you turned my silly mistake(misreading slurpee's post), into something hillarious.
good job! :D

bum ticker. he wsas telling bruce willis he has heart problems!
i just noticed it, but i am glad i originally did this mistake, because phantomcat provided me with awesome explanations!
thanks for clearing things up tho, you're a good sport, slurpee!

BTW, would you like to revive the void 3 with me and some other clocks?
i have posted about this in the general forum, and if there's someone in here that can write a solid story/layout about this, its you.
also, i am one of the few people that know the ACTUAL ending of the Void 3. (said to me by blue-clock many years ago, and i have re-discovered this lost PM just recently)
its a sign! we must complete this!

I feel like there are steadily less and less things on the internet that hold my interest these days. Too bad there's fuck all to do in this podunk town.

Been applying to film schools. Hope I can start somewhere this fall.
you should do a few clock-movies, if you want, and if you have the free time...
i missed you, ankh-clock! how are you, my friend?

also, whats your town's name?

I can write any video game

what you do is make the bad guy turn out to be in some kind of trouble and really not that bad so the heroes need to help him out, and then there's a flood and the real bad guy reveals himself: a fish.

AnkhClock

Undertale seems like it's probably a really good game but everyone says it's a lot like Homestuck in tone and I was addicted to Homestuck years ago. My body is still chemically dependent on Homestuck so if I played Undertale I might overdose on it.

while losperman is one of the wisest men in the clock crew, i have to agree with phantomcat on this one.
i mean, he delivered quite a plot twist in here.
but... the villain is... a fish?!

i am flabbergasted.
or should i say...

bubble-busted?!

I have that same urge, and allowed it to stifle me for years. Eventually I got tired of looking back at missed opportunities and wishing I'd made a different choice, though.
