So I have this laptop with Ubuntu 8.10 yeh...

I'm pretty new to the whole linux thing.

Dell Inspiron 910 mini laptop.

I go to the login screen fine, I put in my information, and after i login, the screen just stays that weird salmon color and blank and I can't do a single thing.

I went into diagnostics from the dell startup screen, and it went all fine so I have no idea whats wrong.

Guys help meeeee.

The Spoiler

What graphics card do you have?

ArcticSwirlClock

Well hold on, I switched the session to Gnome, but now I just get the main screen with my background and the menu bar at the top and I can't move my mouse or do anything.

The Spoiler

Does a cursor show up or not?
Either way you might want to check the system requirements against what you've got. There's also a Ubuntu forum, of course, in case everyone here (myself included) is too dumb to figure this out.

It's worked fine for months, not a fresh install, came from dell like this.

.but yes a cursor shows up.

The Spoiler

Have you been using it regularly this whole time? Does your mouse work at gdm(login) screen?

ArcticSwirlClock

I've been using it on and off, but not as much as this computer.

It works fine except when I actually log in.

That sounds like a tough one. If you installed from a CD and still have it, I'd suggest booting from it to see if it's something wrong with your software or hardware. I couple of other things come to mind. Have you done any major updates/software installs on it lately? If you've got another mouse around that works with the laptop, I don't see the harm in testing it.

Perhaps there was an update the x.conf is messed up....

Does the cursor move if you plug in a external mouse?
If you press ALT+F2 does the "Run application" screen appear?
if you press ctl+Alt+F2 and then Ctl+f7 does it switch to the terminal and back?
