Found this on a news site on one of the sites I actually pay for.

Buffoon Spends $69,696 on “Virtual Egg” – Rest of the World Facepalms

And I thought the guys who spend $700+ on a beefed-up WoW character were bad.

According to Electronic Theatre, some buffoon with a wallet the size of a mid-sized, suburban home paid nearly 70 grand for a “Virtual Egg” in the game Planet Calypso, an MMORPG I personally hadn’t heard of until this very moment (go figure).

Apparently Planet Calypso is the rich man’s MMO, working the same exchange rate as the U.S. dollar. What does this mean? It means that if you have any sense, you’ll probably never play it—well, unless you’re this guy.

The current owner of the most expensive egg in gaming history is none other than David Storey (in game: Deathifier), a poor-minded man who’s family will probably leave him once they learn about his “investment”.
Then again, maybe he has nothing to worry about. I mean, he is the owner of the in-game “Treasure Island“. That’s like being the REAL owner of Treasure Island, only not at all.

In my mind, this story closes with Jon Jacobs (in game: NEVERDIE) laughing his way to the bank, having purchased the egg back in 2006 for a rough ten grand. That’s a 700% profit and the rights to rub his money in the face of anyone who laughed at his investment four years ago.

Best-case scenario: the egg hatches into massive amounts of stock in the company that publishes Planet Calypso.

Worst-case scenario: it hatches into this thing.

overused memes and lame-ass humor aside, this thread is blank

Why would I want to pay real money for an item in a MMO?

Kinda but it doesnt run on actual value of a dollar like this game. Also in Second Life you can have a job and make money that way depending on your skills in the real world its kinda cool but some people get a little into it. Hell Dell has its own Island in Second Life.

This makes me thankful I never got into MMORPG's.

By the article's own admission, didn't the previous owner of this egg spend an equally exorbitant amount on it and then make 700% profit by selling it years later?

It's no more outlandish than investing in the stock market.

GearBoxClock

But  stock isn't just a collection of lines of code

TheClockNessMonster

Yeah, but I imagine it'd be way harder to sell the item at a profit now since it's likely no one will buy it for more than he bought it for, if even.
