neigh. some of the trolls never used their dreamselves up at all. it's implied that sollux did, since he died twice for whatever reason. it's implied that vriska did too during the robo beatdown in Make Her Pay.

but everyone else their dreamselves died, not their normal self. karkat, terezi, nepeta, and feferi were the ones confirmed having their dreamselves alive after hiding in the viel before jack destroyed prospit/derse. the other ones may have had their real bodies died, but nothing's mentioned in the comic about it yet.

if vriska was killing john for no reason then she didn't need to get his permission to put him to sleep
so she probably had her reasons

I just think of it as a more intense version of when kanaya cut tavros in half

Maybe physical death is required to gain one's full potential of power, and not all of the trolls reached that potential in their session.

Vriska is currently in her dreamself form, because she has a real arm, not a robot arm. The version of her that was killed did have a robot arm. We also know that she is very high level and very powerful in that specific form from the troll flash game. We also know, from this recent conversation, that Vriska has at least a few god levels.

From all this we can conclude that being dead in "real" form does not hurt your performance in dream form, and does not prevent you from becoming extremely powerful. There's even some evidence that being in dreamself makes you MORE powerful and raises the level cap significantly. maybe having a real body at all is what causes the level cap, meaning john HAD to die to become supergod!
