... now it has a red dot of death.

Anyone got this problem yet?

MonsterMunch

People must be treating their xboxs like shit.

TequilaClock

for some reason this thread was posted twice. Request to erase one.

I basically leave my 360 on top of the heater (floor vent), with the fan against the wall, and also there's an n64 on top of it, and nothing has ever gone wrong with it.

You sir, are tempting fate.

If threating them like shit is what causes xboxs to break, why did 33% of xboxs break and only 3% of the PS3 and Wii systems break? There's no reason xboxs would be treated worse than a PS3, especially considering how everybody is super careful with xboxs for fear of them breaking. It's obvious that xboxs are just poorly designed.

EDIT: I couldn't find consistent failure rate statistics so I just went with the average. Everywhere I looked had the xbox breaking way more than the runner up PS3 though.

To be fair, you don't have anything. Clocks are just machines that tick.

So if you feel like making some new friends, imaginary or not, why  not come to the Clock Crew, where you\'re guaranteed a seat and a helpful  instructional pamphlet when you walk in, so long as you don\'t act like a  twat.

A failure rate of more than twenty percent on a console almost (?) five years old is bullshit.

They said it was fail proof.

NintendrCkolc

this isnt too shocking as the technology just hit the market but if this RDOD issue escalates it's gonna be pretty infuriating.

Especially if you're like me and have experienced 5 RROD's on 5 different consoles.

Fireman

I was at GAME yesterday and one of the cats there said the issue was that the 360's didn't have a custom made disc drive, they were effectively the same as what you would put in a computer. He said that the disc drive is mounted on top of the graphics card and its heat sink and the fan inside doesn't even touch the area. He also said that the problem could be solved by throwing in another fan.

*NERDMODE ENGAGED*
As someone who fixes 360s in his spare time for some quick dough, this is only partially true.

While it is just a PC-esque drive sitting atop the GPU Heatsink, the fans are positioned with a shroud so that airflow passes through the fins perfectly.
The main cause of RROD among 360s are a design flaw concerning motherboard standoffs in the inner metal housing. Heat caused from prolonged use eventually causes the board to warp and fuck up the solder joints underneath some critical components.

Aaaaaaanyway, my Slim Console is a dream. With the switch to HDMI and a proper resolution for my TV, the Xbox actually antialiases things. Its so pretty. :)

Also, making it go "Beep" when you touch the tray open button is addicting.

Edit: In the new 360s, the CPU and GPU are combined on a single die, and uses a PC-style Heatsink/Fan combo, as seen here: http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/xbox360/new360/_DSC4540.jpg

So is the motherboard safe in this version now? I would like to know.

Unless some non-youtube cases arise, I would say so. Regardless, there won't be any more RROD, as you've said. Something new like overheating could still be possible though. (see pictures)(not my pics) This is the real red dot.

A side note: The disk drive still scratches disks when you move the console.

Well, whatever happens I hope it's not some constant crap like the previous XBOX360

when it's on? why would you even do that

to play games on the xbox you basically are putting a fragile 50 dollar optical disc into a box of whirring mechanical parts
why add your clumsy shaky filthy gorilla mitts into the equation

I don't know but its a problem that haters like to point out. I thought I'd mention it in case someone actually cared.

WrenchClock

Just saying, the new 360 looks kinda like the Master System, and it's hardly smaller than the original :/

Asshatclock

The slim version is just as big as the regulair version I don't get that.

Its about 2-3 inches shorter and an inch or so skinnier.
Its about as deep front to back as the original.
I just held that shit up and checked.
