boxer hockey is weird
the guy has gotten really good at drawing, and he's done some interesting things with panel layouts without falling into the common webcomic pitfalls of confusing visual continuity, and he has decent timing and knows how to deliver a joke, but for some reason a lot of the time it's bad and not funny, like he just didn't feel like pounding out a proper joke, and the humor is never really subversive or subtle, even when it wants to be.

a lot of the humor is kind of character-derived or continuity-based, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the comics kind of get worse and more poorly drawn the further back you go, so to get to know the characters and better ensconce yourself in the mindset required to properly enjoy it, you have to read through the weird, uninteresting, manga-inspired and more-than-occasionally-racist early stuff. it's also in the middle of a drama arc, which, while not as hamfisted as you might expect from a webcomic, does make the current updates a little impenetrable.

boxer hockey also exercises the peculiar webcomic trait of having one of the characters be a happy well-meaning retard as best friend and foil to a gruff cynic with low moral fibre- you know who I'm talking about. their names are rittz and skip, and you've seen them before. rittz is even going through the exact same characterization process lemmy from fanboys went through a while back, where the big secret of his past is he had a shitty childhood and for some reason it made him the jason bourne of emotionally stunted manchildren.

it's not awful, though. in fact as far as webcomics go, it's well above-average.

If you think BH has bad art you must have an unrealistically high standard for webcomics. I can think of few that look better, and many that are much, much worse.

Actually recently the artist has really improved the art of the comic and managed to get away from the shitty manga-inspired look from the beginning of the series.
