I thought his amazing ability to avoid commenting on what Obama actually said was more noticeable than his blinking, but yeah he did a lot of that.

General Discussion / Internet Explorer 8 (beta2)
October 18, 2008, 04:27:51 PM
I haven't tried IE8 yet, though I've been using Chrome, which I have mixed feelings about. I like the lack of cluttered top bar, the new tab screen, the separate processes, the task manager, the incognito browsing, and how it deals with popups (possibly the best feature). On the other hand, it doesn't seem to have image zoom or no scripts and the lack of menu bars is as annoying as it is refreshing. I've been going between that and firefox lately.

I'll have to give IE8 a shot soon.

Quote from: Zombie Lincoln;1429249So I suppose there could be an occasion where someone who genuinely wants to participate is serverbanned and there are no ops online to unban him.  But that's just as likely to happen on a separate chat server unless serverbans are not to be used there.

In fact, it'd be far more likely that there'd be serverban problems if you weren't using a private server. I suppose if you're switching from one private server to another that's kind of immaterial though.

I don't know. Usually the first thing I do when I run into a problem is toss a live CD in. It can be a quick way of eliminating hardware from the equation and I can not only look at the partitions but do a bit of backing up if need be. In the mean time he may find that he likes it once he gets his feet in the water. A partition CD would do just as well but doesn't leave the tendency to want to stick with it as an OS. Also I generally have livecds kicking around.

Quote from: Captain Crunch;1428505Use a partitioning cd (I prefer GParted since you can boot from it and do your partitioning there.) Check your partitions that way, or you can get a windows 98 boot disk online for free. Run it, and when it starts type in the command "fdisk". Check the partitions to make sure they are good, and that they are all properly formatted to NTFS. I'd also recommend you read the following: This since some people have trouble booting into Vista after installing XP.

Ubuntu, I like Linux as much as you do, but he asked for XP help so it's only fair to give him that. And maybe next time Exclamation, don't say "copy" with quotes :o

Yes but he can get a legitimate copy of a linux distribution for free and then know if it's a hardware problem, not a bad pirated copy of windows.

General Discussion / Ever have that sensation

Actually, yeah, but generally with one particular thing in my field of view. It's why I never played volleyball in high school. Back in the days of phones with cords, I could never see where they were either. It's weird too because other than that my vision is pretty perfect.

Again I said share it, but I don't think such a thing is possible.

The internet has as many forms of societies as it has communities. As a whole, though, sharing seems to be the way of things and ideas gain exposure based on merit, not marketing. That second bit is probably the most important aspect of the difference in information exchange. By eliminating mass media and allowing absolutely anybody to catch on, entertainment and culture benefit massively.

You've touched upon something very important, though: a sociological phenomenon that is unique to our times. We have developed communities that aren't survival oriented. This is probably why the internet seems so strange in comparison with the rest of the world. Social traits are adaptive or maladaptive for entirely different reasons, so they evolve in new directions.

I can't wait until anthropologists at large get serious about the internet.

Necrapolis / a Hypothetical Question

I voted share without knowing what it was I was sharing. :o

As far as an actual answer goes, though, there's no such thing. Can't prove a negative. For that matter you can't prove that there is because God is an incredibly vague qualification.

I not only thought Boong-Ga Boong-Ga was Japanese, I was all ready to use it as an example of why Japan is weirder than Korea. Damn. Korea wins.
