Art can't survive in a film industry that takes economic prosperity over actual merit as a form of entertainment. I guess that can only really be said about the US film industry, as the production of film is relatively independent in most countries.

It's funny how Pixar has the biggest and most original ideas for their movies, which is usually poison for an American film that insists on just changing the names of some characters from a story used last year. Does the ambition of Pixar have little to do with their success?

Because, typically, kids do want shit. At least what teens and adults consider shit. You have those rare exceptions like the Pixar movies, SpongeBob SquarePants, etc. that can appeal to a wider audience, but a lot of the things kids find funny are pretty I'm a edgy teen by our standards. It's all in the writing. If writers/producers are skilled enough to put jokes in their that are adult enough for older audiences to laugh, but not "bad" enough for them to be concerned with obscenity... monies.

Because the Shrek films do very well in terms of Box Office, kids do say they love them and shit is far easier to make than good. And if people are going to buy it anyway...

Also, ever notice that every Mike Myers sequel has a certain percentage less new material every time with all the back references and such. It'll be interesting when Shrek 10 comes out to see if it's 100% rehashed material.

I'm guessing the movie involves Shrek having 12 children and living with them is very hard but they are still a loving family the end.
