This is also true, but the political freedom is debatable because of hate speech restriction and gun restriction.  Also, the Netherlands has a less diverse population.

Either way, I think you overestimate the intelligence of the masses.  If the people have jobs, luxuries, beer, pussy (or dick), then most aren't going to give two fucks about what the government does.  Combine this with the feeling of knowing you're a citizen of a super power, then you'll have all kinds of people justifying torture, unnecessary wars, and saying AMERICA FUCK YEAH!
