there's this cycle of time-wasting where I consume two forms of media at the same time (e.g. listening to music while browsing the internet, playing games while listening to podcasts, "watching" youtube videos while browsing the web or playing games) and one naturally ends earlier than the other, so I start the next thing (e.g. another youtube video) without thinking about it to keep the noise going, then the other one ends and I do the same thing (e.g. starting another round of, say, FTL) without thinking about it to keep the noise going

I've been trapped in this cycle for at least 12 years, which I know because I remember the first time I noticed it was the summer Random Access Memories came out, but there's a good chance it was going on long before that

there are a few activities that break the cycle, and they're coincidentally ones that are probably better for me than anything in the cycle: exercise, because I get tired eventually, cooking or cleaning, because you finish, reading/writing/studying/homework, because I have to focus to do it, and watching movies or t.v. or playing games that I'm not already familiar with, again because I have to pay attention

this realization led to me doing more of the things that are good for me, but it only takes you so far because the pull of the cycle is astronomical. I'm beginning to think it's not a "me" thing, like not just a bad habit or even an ADHD thing, I think it's at least partially a consequence of the attention economy and everything being designed to prolong engagement without offering anything of substance

I remember the first time I read The Animators Survival Kit and one of the first bits of advice he gave was to "unplug" because you're not smart enough to focus on two things at once, and as soon as I tried that I started getting better at animating. maybe that's something I need to try in general, just one thing at a time. you'd think it'd be less efficient but when you're doing two things you're kind of not really doing either of them. if I forced myself to *just* watch youtube videos when I watch youtube videos I'd probably be a lot more conscious of how much time I'm wasting watching youtube videos.
