over the past few days, you saw people sharing someone's post with suggestions about who to donate to, ok, cool. but also, I've seen at least a dozen people share variations on the same information. minnesota freedom fund has had so many donations that they're directing people to donate to other organizations. it's good that they now have as much money as they think they need, but the "sorcerer's apprentice" aspect to all of this is kind of concerning. I think the immediacy of social media has made some people think that "fires and looting" is where their particular city needs to be at, or they're not reacting enough.

I also feel like for politically active people, at this point, showing up in person to this clusterfuck is much more likely to get someone ELSE injured by cops in riot mode than it is to change any of the stuff that ought to be changed. I realize people are restless because of covid, too, but as much as this feels like a bootlicker thing to say, I wish more people would stay home and find a more concrete way of holding cops accountable/nerfing the police/keeping asshats out of blue suits/taking control of their own immediate neighborhood.

this is not a groundbreaking opinion, but the posts I've seen from normal people (i.e. not companies) have not all been meaningful or useful either

a friend of mine runs something like a meme account that's not political at all, with thousands of legitimate followers, and broke immersion to make a succinct "black lives matter" post. he's based in a liberal part of the country where that might even be regarded as "not enough," but the non-political nature of his account meant that some of his followers were #AllLivesMatter or possibly even #maga people who didn't see it coming and got all pissy in the comments. that's one of the few posts I've seen where it didn't feel at all like "performative activism," or a liberal preaching to the choir for fear of being seen as Team The Cops.

I won't go into it here but his criminal record is publically available, and suffice it to say he did some pretty messed up stuff. Like Pop-tart said it's not really relevant to the current situation, and the specific event that lead to his death was trivial (he used a bill which was thought to be a counterfeit to buy something; it's likely Mr. Floyde wasn't even aware the bill was fake, or the bill might not have even been fake at all.)

there's also the issue with any city above a certain size where the cops stop being part of the community. if you ever hear of people having good experiences with cops, it's often because they're from small or smallish towns.  compared to a big city precinct where they either don't trust or know the community, or they have outright contempt for it. their only friends are other cops.

the closest thing I can think of to a solution would be three things. we would need to somehow invent a better system to filter out the inherently shitty ones before they even get a badge. a form of oversight that prevents massive corruption and abuse yet doesn't hamper their ability to enforce the law. a way to somehow maintain a personal connection with the entire community in big cities like in smaller ones. I have no idea how any of this would be done or what the logistics are for doing so. I don't the first two are even possible. it sounds like offending precinct might actually get replaced, and I'd genuinely like to hear their response to your question if they get kicked out, but I don't see much happening on a nationwide level outside of some new regulations in precincts that already know better anyways. though I'm sure this will be used heavily as a political weapon by both parties and by both candidates as the election ramps up for votes and sewing societal tension and disunity. all of whom don't plan on doing shit for anybody.

They could both just be suicides. The only evidence that they were lynchings seems to be the imaginations of activists and the family not realizing he was suicidal. It only made the news because race-bait articles get those advertising bucks right now.

But yeah, if that makes you comfortable. I'll wait for the blood to be explained. Then wait for the explanation of how a 6'3 man hanged himself with a USB cable. Then how the 24 year old didn't break that twig of a tree. I like devil's advocate as much as the next guy, but really think about the wording of the phrase. 2,000 people marching from that tiny tree to the sheriff's station is news on its own, so is the attorney general's probe. Pump the brakes on that dismissive silencing for at least a couple of days. "Race-bait".

I can understand that reaction. It was rather dismissive of the protesters which garnered the attention in the first place.
I have my own bias here. Rather than playing devil's advocate, it's more that I'm inherently distrustful of any new story that comes out which sounds shocking or disturbing. Unless there's strong evidence to the contrary, I'm going to assume the least interesting version of events is what's true. The fact of the matter is, modern media is not in the business of spreading news. They're in the business of getting you to watch ads. Social media is even worse, with things that sound bad being amplified simply based on how bad they sound.

Anyway, that's the perspective that most of my views on events come from.
